  • ElyQ Pronunciation

    How do you pronounce ElyQ?

    (a) eel-eye-cue (long thin fishy, ball in your head used for sight, stick for playing snooker)

    (b) eel-eee-cue (long thin fishy, short for ecstasy pill, stick for playing snooker)

    (c) ellie-cue (as in Nellie - the Elephant, stick for playing snooker)

    (d) other? (please explain)

There's a small town about 30 miles from where I live in Cambridgeshire called Ely. It's pronounced eel-eee. So I've naturally used option (b) as my preferred pronunciation. Thing is, I've heard people at my own club use (a) and when I spoke with Matt the Splatt earlier today, he used (c), and he works for a major retailer.

Sorry to name and shame you Matt, but this is of the utmost importance as I'm sure you can imagine.

So which one is it, just for fun of course?

All bets are off, it's a name coined by Italians, therefore they'll pronounce it in their own inimitable way !
              Janek

Why does it always persist down at weekends ?

i think B and C are so very close, distinguishing either is easily mistaken based on the individual and local accents.
I think id have to say more C though personally EL...Y....Q

If Liam's thread is representative, I'd pronounce it "no spares available"

I have a house in Ely BTW, having lived there for several years. Lovely place...apart from the web-footed locals...

I never even thought about it actually. I have been using pronunciation C (ellie que) since 3DM last year where I first saw them and it seems like that's how everyone was saying it.

Is that pronounced Eel-eee, Eee-eye or Ellie by those Fen dwellers?

It is said that Ely derives its name from 'eel' and '-y' or '-ey' meaning island. This may be true, due to the position of Ely, an island in low-lying fens that were historically very marshy and rich in eels . It has even been claimed that, during the 11th century, monks of the town used eels as currency to pay their taxes.

                            Sounds like a Wiki-answer.

There was a thread I saw on a photographic site I frequent (based in the USA) debating how to pronounce Nikon.

The majority of the US responders went with N-eye-con and, in spite of finding the correct pronunciation on Nikon's web site (it's knee-con):
