  • Winter storing Nitro's?

I'm gonna store a couple of helis in the loft over the winter and concentrate on just the one to bring my flying on until the spring

Wan't to keep them in the best order so i'm thinking full tanks of fuel rather than empty to eliminate gas damage.

The engines will be burnt free of fuel and the loft is snuggly warm/insulated. Lipos removed and blades left on but in caddies.

    Will this suffice chaps?

Fill the engine with after run oil Mark, keep the bearing free from any moisture.
I personnally would remove the main blades and keep them in the house, and remove the lipos, run them down a bit first though.
As for the helis, i would rap them in a blanket or somethink just to keep them safe

Fuel can go off and turn to a nasty gunk...I don't know about helis but I've had planes languishing in the shed for litterally years that I've just wiped the muck off and gone and flown.

Why not just drain every thing and disconnect the pipes if you're worried about gas damage....what ever that is!

What is the best way to look after engines during unregular flying.

I plan to fly through the winter but not as often maybe once or twice max a month.

Last year I only just started out when it turned cold so we kept flying every weekend we could so storing then was not a concern.

i would leave the tanks empty and replace the fuel lines when you get them back out
spray the head/ metal parts in wd40 or even give the metal a coating in a light oil such as 3in1
and defo blades off with the engines full of after run oil and the carb fuel line off and the nipple pluged (a bit of fuel tube with a bolt in it will do)

One of them is yours mate... ready and waiting.

i will get some after run oil then and block the carb feed.

the tanks are topped up full with no air in the tanks so on synthetic optifuel should be good but have disconnected from the engine pick ups.

The loft is warm and dust free so should be cosy.... they have been in the conservatory lately and with cold nights they were getting damp.... not good so i'd rather store the helis not in use safe and sound

                  Hi,
My old man is a plank flyer of over 20 years and flies everything from micros to huge full on 3d machines with 180 engines in them. Yes 180, double the size of our trex 700 engines. And knows his stuff. Anyhow for after run he does not use the tiny bottles of after run oil you get in the model shops. He uses Automatic transmission fluid from Halfords or similar. It is effectively the same stuff. Just a thin oil. But you get a huge bottle for less money. Will last years or share it with your mates.
Just a few drops in the engine and a few turns to get it into the engine and they will be good for all winter. He has a shed load of planks with absolutely top notch engines in all of them and they are well looked after and run beautifully. I dread to think of the value of them all. So with 20 odd years of using ATF something must be right. HTH.
                  Cheers, Rich

                      Hi,
Just make sure it is definitely Automatic transmission fluid as this is thin enough for the job. Most other engine oils are way to thick.
