Advertised my club swapmeet on the site and got an offer from Nigeria for it.

We can stop these responses by setting the software to only allow registered users to view the ads, however this would drastically reduce the number of genuine potential buyers from seeing the ads so we feel it wouldn't be desireable.

Nice to see the BMFA are improving the classified site, encouraging international competition like this.

I'm actually ashamed to be a member of the BFMA, which makes me associated with an organisation who seem reluctant, or incapable, of stamping out the fraudsters using their site.

The only thing that saves most people from being caught out is the utter incompetence of the fraudsters themselves (mostly !).

if your genuine potential buyers are not members of your site or the bmfa ,how will you ever stop the constant fraud transactions from your site to your members??????????.and to be honest why would any one really want to send there for sales around the world when if its advertised at a good competitive price the uk market is just fine.

It's pretty easy to recognise these scams through the wording. They are getting wiser though. I have had a few from UK email addresses which are quite convincing.

this guy was from nigeria when the chq arrive it was for £2000 pounds with a note inside.saying he wanted me to post the differance on to he's brother
A lot of them ask you not to bother about shipping as they will arrange it and you are supposed to give the balance to the shipper. I always tell them to send the cheque to the shipper and ask him to bring to correct amount. I never seem to get a reply from them after that

A few years ago, I advertised my Century long ranger. Had an email from Holland asking me the current condition of the car I was selling Didn't bother replying.

                    Entertainment!

If you take the trouble to get into some of the content / projects in the following site, you'll end up having to break out the Tena Pads with some of the laughing you'll do.

Wonderful stuff, although one has to have sympathy for the poor sods whose desperate, social situations force them to be manipulated by a local 'Mr. Big' with the promise of any income.

                        whats the BFMA?

I will welcome your suggestions on how we stop the nigerian spam type emails, feel free to PM me with them. Other sites also struggle with the problem, I have recently advertised a caravan on a site where you have to pay to advertise and got one of these scam emails. So it's not just a BMFA problem.

Some sensible precautions on the part of the users and there should be no problems.

If you are concerned it's not compulsory to use the site, however the vast majority of the 1800 or so registered users seem happy with the service.

If you want some idea's on how to help reducing the scamming merchants here's a few ideas.

The BMFA Classified Ads Service / T-REX 700 Ultralite Extreme 3D Edition

                          1. On this ad and all your giving the viewer publicly the sellers e-mail address - remove this from the template so its not shown - force viewers to use the contact seller button.
                          2. Place into the template a visitor geo box so that they know that you have there IP details etc (well you don't really - but the perception is the opposite) Geolocation visitor personalized information
                          3. I've attached a list of some 4000 IP's that where linked to african zones a while ago - its worth double checking as I bet a few have moved around by now. But its still worthwhile getting hold of an IP range for this region.
                          Attached Files
                          Cheers
                          Stuart
