I've been having issues with tail wag on my 450 for a while now and could not figure out what I was doing wrong - till now! So here we go with a description for those of you that might just be suffering with the same brain fade issues that I seem to have......
Talk about a lightbulb going on - finally managed to get my head round my gyro/tail issue thanks to a thread on another forum - oh and a lot of head scratching.
I use a 401 with a 9650 digital servo and my radio is a spectrum DX6i
Up until now I have inhibited the "gyro" menu and just used Travel Adjust end points for the gyro to control gain (where HH was set on the up switch position or "0" on the gyro switch at 72% and Rate was set on the "1" position of the gyro switch at 32%) but I've always had issues with this because I could not seem to stop the tail from wagging. I messed about with the settings a lot - re did everything but still no real change.
I had tried to change the travel adjust end points back to 100% and activate the gyro menu, but each time I did this the 401 would not initialise in HH mode (despite the gyro switch being in the HH or "0" position). I tried and tried to get my head round this - I just could not work out why it would initialise in HH mode when using Trav Adj end points but would not when using the gyro menu????
Then I took another look at Finless, read the swift tuning blurb and it hit me - the damn gyro setting in the TX was reversed - it should have been in the "normal" position. Set it back to normal and hey presto it initialises in HH mode using the gyro menu. Now the gain seems to work in the right way and all seems well with the world. Stupid mistake but its amazing sometimes that the blindingly obvious is impossible to see.
So just in case you are still confused my setting are now as follows:
DX6i settings:
Trav Adj (gyro) all set at 100%
Gyro menu active:
position "0" set at 72% (HH) - I always run in HH mode.
position "1" set at 30% (Rate)
GY401:
Digital (DS Mode) on (active for the digital 9650 servo)
Limit is about 100 (no binding)
Delay is set to "0"
For your info Finless Bob (Helifreak) talks about "true gain" which can be a bit different form what the TX indicates. He says that in his experience (which is vast) that he has never had to have true gain be more than 35% (I think) and in some cases it has been as low as 17/18%. So how do you work it out. Well take a look at his video's for a better description but the simple version is as follows (for the Spectrum tx):
My HH percentage is 72%
the Calculation is (HH% - 50) * 1.44
so 72 - 50 = 22
22 * 1.44 = 31.68
So True Gain = 32%
Going to have some coffee now, my head hurts.
Cheers,
