  • What to do with a 6s pack with one puffy cell

Unfortunately one of my Revolution packs has developed a puffy cell and the voltage has dropped, the rest of the cells are balenced fine

Has anyone tried to replace a single cell with any sucess?

If this is an option the next question is has anyone a "spare" 4800 cell(s) that they would be willing to part with with suitable financial compensation ?

Unfortunately Mike is out of them.

    Cheers

It's not usually done, replacing only a single cell, as the original pack should be made of matched cells with similar internal resistances, this is so the cells all discharge at an equal rate. If you replace one cell then it's very unlikely internal resistance will match as the cells will probably have come out of very different batches plus the used cells will probably have lots more cycles on them. The end result will probably be a pack that ends up unbalanced after use and takes ages to charge, although the Cellpro 10 should manage this well.

+1, replacing cells can be done! but its strongly recomended that you don't for the above reasons, unfortunately if 1 cell is gone then that pack is no longer, you do have the option to remove that one cell and have a smaller pack left over, but i woulnt fly it may be as a starter battery, or a power source for something else you use, if thats not appealing then you should really dispose of it as safely as possible.

I would probably swap the cell and see what happens if you can get another cell for the right price.

Just be very carefull when soldering the pack, especially when removing the faulty cell.

ANother option may be to convert the pack to 3 or 4 cell and use it on a different model.

This happened to one of my batteries last week. I wouldnt reccomend this on safety grounds, but if you take proper precautions its allways quite amusing to short them out and blow them up, yes how very imature - but I cant help it.

At least you get one last bang out of them ;-)

And of course I only do it so that they are then safe to dispose of......

This is one of the reasons to use two 3S4800 packs connected in series as then the loss when a cell puffs is less.
consider making a pair of 2s4800 receiver packs for a nitro out of this one if their shape is suitable.
I betting the tabs on the revolution are aluminium so re soldering won't be so easy. youneed special flux/solder.

Have been wondering about this too. Is it better to be using 2 packs together or just 1, what are the pros and cons of each? I guess charging is easier with 1 pack, but what are other peoples thoughts on 1 or 2 pack setups? (obviously for a 22.2v setup)

I dont have a 6cell model at the moment, but if I did I would want two 3S packs rather than one larger one.
Firstly because I can use the 3S packs in my 450.
Secondly because your less likely to damage both in a crash.
Thirdly because I can only charge upto 4S on my charger

The disadvantage is that they are more trouble to charge and the total weight is probably a bit higher.
They might also be harder to fit under the canopy and there is more chance that they can come loose (a guy at the club didnt secure his packs properly and one escaped and went through his blades.. a very expensive mistake)

Im not sure on the total cost, but I would expect one 6S pack to be cheaper than two 3S, so if you only have one model that needs 6S then it might be more sensible to get big packs.

                      6s to 5s
Done this a couple of times on my Logo 10. you can still get some flying out of them but l`d stick to the more gentle style and keep an eye on the temps. lf in doubt bin it, lipos are cheap enough from Hong Kong now that you needn`t take too many risks with them.

i have 450's and 500's and have used both 3 and 6s extensively!
And 6s gets my vote every time, theres so many plus points for it and none that are realistic against, that said if your just learning to hover then 3s will get you by but using a proper 6s is what you should aim for, as has been stated already Hong Kong supply them cheap enough for it not even needing consideration, i fly Zippy's in my 500 and i wouldnt use anything else ive tried alot of "premium" brandeed packs and the Zippys beat them all!

                          Thanks for the replies.

Getting close to Nov 5 the firework option is appealling

The balancing between cells if I did manage to fix it was a concern, therefore, I'll probably resort to chopping it down to 3s pack, or try 4s on the Eco8 though the airframe might explode

I've just bought a zippy 6s equivalent, it'll be interesting to see how it goes.
