  • Sponsored Sail - St. Wilfrid’s Coastal Challenge

    Hi All,

I've been given the opportunity to crew on a boat for the St Wilfrids Coastal Challenge this coming weekend after much searching around. This is a race of approx 12 nautical miles and all the sponsorship money raised goes to St Wilfrids Hospice, a local hospice that cares for the sick, tired and elderly who can't manage things themselves. This charity is very close to my heart so naturally I want to do what I can for them.

I have created a Just Giving page and would appreciate any sponsorship money you can donate . Trevor Burley is fundraising for St Wilfrid's Hospice - JustGiving

If I can I will get some photos of the event but am a bit reluctant to take my SLR on a boat.

Many Thanks for your help - Trev

Thanks - it's a big yacht so should have no trouble keeping it the right way up.

I sponsored you, although I only think you are doing it due to your rubber fetish.

The race is tomorrow, we have to be locked out (leave the harbour) by 8:00am otherwise we'll ground out on the channel leading out from the harbour so a very early start for me . Thankfully we're on a large 36ft yacht with a kitchen so bacon sarnies will be served up once we've cleared the shallow water and moored up. From then on it's twiddling thumbs until the race start time early afternoon.

I'm up to £185 in sponsorship - thanks to all that have kindly sponsored me to do this, looking at the weather it's going to be a very _looooooonnnnnngggggg_ and slow race. The money has all gone to a good cause which I have a personal interest in and together with the other competitors I'm sure we've made a helpful difference.

Many Thanks for everyone's support - Trev

Well, it's all done and dusted now, it was a rather slow race due to the extreme lack of wind, going out we hit 4 knots at times (through the water) and on the way back we were hitting speeds around 0.3 knots (through the water) which factoring in the tide was about 1.7 knots over ground. The race took a total of 6 hours to do a shortened course of only 6 nautical miles!

Believe it or not, it was actually hard work and constant tweaking to get the optimum performance out of the yacht. All of us were shattered by the end of the day but a good time was had by all.

Overall I believe (this needs confiming) that we finished 4th over the line, beaten by 2 racing yachts and a trimaran. This could mean we won on handicap, I have yet to see the results.

I have one or two photos to upload, one of which is of our close call with a huge oil tanker whilst we were passing through the shipping lanes at less than 1 knot! Will post here when I have a chance!

                          Cheers - Trev
