  • Charmouth Fly in Question

Crash-alot & I are headed down to Charmouth next month but we've just noticed that we need an A-Cert to fly.

Although we are both fairly competent & above all safe fliers we havent had the opportunity to take the test lately. At our local club we have not seen a BMFA rep for a while and it doesnt look likely within the next couple of weeks.

My question is, if we can prove a level of competency on our first few flights are we going to need accompanying the whole time?
If we do need a qualified pilot next to us the whole time will there be some available the whole weekend?

In previous years those with an A or B could have someone with a B stand with them and fly. Seek out a pilot with a B and you should then be allowed to fly. I hope they haven't change the rules on this!

Why not do your A cert when you are down there

I'm going and would happily take you through it, being an examiner and all that

Yea thanks Bond007, I'd go for that. I'm sure crash-alot would too.
Just as a matter of interest where can I find the list of questions that you select from?
I've done the BMFA online test a load of times but the questions are often repeated and I'm not sure they're all on there.

Just read the handbook from page 16 onwards. Pay particular attention to waht SMART stands for. Look out for the information on blade failure. Clearly understand pre-flight and post-flight checks. Know your own club rules and how, even though you may have gone 2.4 not everyone has, the peg board system works for 35MHz. You might be helping someone out who is still on 35MHz.

Try and remember what the air navigation order rules are and the cap rules. After that it is mostly common sense safety questions.

You should of been given a copy when you get your insurance. Now if you don't have BMFA then you won't be able to fly at Charmouth anyway.

You can find a PDF copy on the BMFA website and also what is expected of you during the A test.

                      Oh I see.
Well I assume I have insurance, I paid for it, the cheque's been cashed, a while back but no phsical evidence of anything. I'd guess I better start chasing that up!!!

You will need to provide proof of insurance before you will be allowed to fly. A valid BMFA membership card is sufficient. If you haven't received any paperwork, you need to chase it up pronto!

We regularly get people taking tests at Charmouth, as there are always plenty of examiners around.

                        Best of luck!

The questions are taken after the flying/hovering part of the test, don't overlook the difficulty of the A it's not as easy as many people think. There is no list of questions but the handbook does give a good idea of what will be asked. Particularly blade failure and what can cause it. As Andy says above don't forget the peg systems and your local club rules if your in one.

I go here quite often and regularly score 90% and above...

                            BMFA 'A' Certificate questions

But as I said earlier, it often repeats the questions and I'm not sure they're all on there.

And as far as my insurance go's the cheque was cashed at the beginning of August, I was sent an email saying I was covered but nothing else yet, I have been to my club a couple of times but it's only ever been me & crash-alot on our ownsome so there's no one to ask.
How long does the paperwork usually take to come through?

You should have it by now!

Phone the BMFA admin during office hours and chase it up. As a previous poster said, "no BMFA card, no fly!".

www.bmfa.org for contact number, and don't forget to get your handbook as well. As to questions, read the advice from above posters.

As Mr Christy said, no problem with taking A or B certs as there are always a few examiners attending. Ask at the TX check in and we'll sort it out.

                              Look forward to seeing you
