I've got the greatest respect for the British Postie. Here (Portugal) no mail of any sort is delivered unless you live on a major road. It has to be collected from the local Post Office. (A 5 mile round trip for me.) You are not told that it is there, you just have to keep trying until it arrives. I tracked a parcel from Hong Kong, (Li-Po charger) took 2 days to get to Lisbon and 6 weeks to get to my local post office. Even then I had to wait 1/2 hour for the postman to arrive so that I could sign his book, it stays in his top pocket at all times!!!

The postal service is the one thing that I really miss here the RM is far and away the best I have found, except maybe in Germany.

Sorry I thought that was illegal, and that the minimum wage was the legally minimum that could be paid to an employee. Postmen are worth more than the Minimum wage - cirtainly ours are reliable, friendly and helpful. My wife was a rural Postie for a while a few years ago and shee loved it - but that was 25 years ago. Even my daughters get the full Minimum wage working down the local pub/restaurant.

Train Drivers are well paid though.... and still hold us up to ransom.

Time was when Managers looked after their staff and went in to bat for them... or am I just old fashioned?
If they dont like the deal....quit the job, striking to me is just like blackmail (no pun intended)

The original post stated 'national average' not 'Minimum'.

By definition a lot of people will earn less than the 'national average' wage or it wouldn't be an average, there is nothing wrong with that.

If you brought everyone below the average up to the average the average would just move up

Postmen are worth more than the minimum wage and thankfully they do get paid more than that.

Not easy to get sympathy for this sort of action though at a time when many people are taking pay cuts and working longer hours to keep their businesses going then find that services vital to keeping orders moving are going to be affected by strike action ...

Dead right there Mark T. Without the P.O. my business would never have turned into the success it was. We depended on them for 85% of our deliveries.
