  • has anyone's heli blades ever flown off?

    heya,

I'm getting a used blade 400 in a couple of days, and im just wonding if anyone's heli blades have ever flown off while flying?

I saw a video of how to set up a heli, and one of the procedures was hold the blades at eye level, spin them, and see if they are off track. Now if one of the blades flys off, you'd be blind.

    Anyone experienced anything like this?

      God I hope not

It the way most if not all track their blades.

I would have thought that if a blades flys of straight out it would have a tendancy to lift as it flys outwards due to the fact its trying to lift even in a hover so it naturally would go up even if it was only a slight angle so therefore prob skimming you hair

I had once when I was testing my heli on the ground - an experience I'd not like to repeat too often if not ever.

Edit : I followed the instruction manual and stayed 4 metre away from the heli.

        Cheers

Just hover it away from you. You will still see if the blades are off track.

When i first started out come 16+ years ago, we used to use wooden blades (no carbon blades then) and you had to glue the lead weight in to the blades and some people didnt used the right glue and we used to see lead weights come flight out all the time and blades shattering.

Oh they was the days of duck and dive for cover lol maybe why some old plankers nowerdays dont like helis as they remember these deadly things flying at them lol

thats reminds me of when i was a plank flyer
My mate had come back from living in US and was broke and i Bought his brand new Kyosho concept 30 DX with 40 mhz radio Well i'd changed os25 for asp36 with ali fan with proper ali starting cone (big deal then 20 years back) Well engine needed tuning But i had an idea!!! Robbie hold the skids while i open it up too full power!! Yes he went for it Well got motor tuned then backed off little, great. Well next thing one blade flew off nearly full power and hes just about holding still...i was long gone by this time and i had no control with TX ;( Well he stuffed it in the ground but he was fine sorta few beers later and was funny storie.
We from last crash i'd got some new wood blades. Covered them with expoyed in weights so on but didn't epoxy root washers. I did say i'd do it after tunning engine ...whoops. They where still in blade holders but one blade had flown off somewhere...appeared few days later at the front door(landed 3 doors down)

Happy days that stories still pops up now and then

If you forget the jesus bolt then the blades can fly off by themselves... no problem....

And 450 V2's spit blades when the silly lil bolt in the feathering spindle gives up thats a common problem...

l`ve seen `em fly off five times. Two sets were carbon. Not seen them fly from a 450 though.

I've not had any fly off as such, I was hovering on my street - empty at time - and my heli started getting a pretty bad wobble on, so landed in record time to find the root had split and the blade was sliding down the root shaft and was about to come off.
I have pictures below of the damage:
