  • Put the Raptor in

    Hi Guys
I had a bit of a orientation moment at the weekend when I was nose in only about a foot off the ground. My Raptor went in on it's side. Usual stuff has gone... blades, feathering shaft, flybar etc.

How do I tell if the main shaft is bent though? I have rolled it on a piece of glass and it rolls ok but I can't tell if its a few thou out - any ideas? The main shaft bearings are a bit rough but they could have been like that already. All the bearings on the feathering shaft and blade grips seem fine.

Also, it went in on the tail side. The tail blades are fine with not a mark on them but there was a bit of mud embedded in the screw heads where it hit the ground. Does the tail shaft and / or tail hub suffer from this sort of impact or are they usually ok??

I did hit throttle hold but I think it had already hit the ground. I can't really remember - it's all a bit fuzzy. Wierd, I thought it would be very clear in my mind

Any help on what normally needs replacing would be appreciated.

    Cheers
    Cheers, Lee.

Hi mate,,what a plumb,,no just kidding,,i would say if your not sure about anything,,change it,,the parts for the raptor are cheap so wouldnt break the bank, but give it a good check,i would say that your spindle is ok if you rolled it on glass and seemed straight,,but like i said before,,buy a new one and keep it for a spare maybe,,sorry to hear it leebert,,but happens to us all,,

For what they cost, I replace all three shafts after every untimely arrival - main shaft, feathering spindle and tail shaft.

Just do it as a matter of course, and there'll be no doubts in your mind.

Quick UK ones are cheaper than originals, and are generally pretty good quality.

if the mainshaft rolls fine on glass its fine. you will hear it bounce if its out. Also look for light under the mainshaft as its rolling.

Tail output shaft is probably fine.
take the tail hub and put some sideways force on the grip, if the hub has a tendancy to turn then its bent doubtful tho
if a bearing is rough, change it.

          Thanks for the tips guys.
I hadn't thought about looking for light under the shaft - I'll check that out.
Ordered all the bits from Skyline - came to about £100
Blades were most of that though. I went for the TT carbon 600s as I have heard good things about them.
Back to the hovering patch for me for a bit I think.
          Cheers, Lee.

            sorry you had a bump.

My raptor 30 went in side on just drop due to a servo wire shorting it got damaged in a previous crash and I hadn't spotted it.

But have a hover flight and then get back out there....

Hope your not 2 down about it, I think you have done exceptionally well considering the time you have had it.
Unless you try that bit harder each time you fly you wont progress. Its just the normal learning curve I should imagine. Keep going matey, and block out the expense Its nearly xmas anyway

Sorry to hear about your little bump Lee, Im sure you will be back up and running soon, the trick is to get back out there as soon as you can and start flying again.

One little pointer, when you have got your model fixed and uptogether again, dont forget to dab a spot of oil in all the usual places, and that all the controls etc. are all running smoothly, and with no slop, that the balls are tight and there are no damaged linkages.

                Cheers,
                Pete.

Thanks for the wise words there guys.
Disc: Cheers! Things like servo wires being trapped I hadn't considered I'll have to give it all a good check over when it's all together again.

Twister: Thanks, but I think I have had the next 5 xmases in goodies this year already

Pete: Luckily, I had the T-rex with me too and, once I had relaxed a bit, I went back out and had a hover. Also a mate (very trustingly) let me have a hover on his Synergy - which I rather liked Stangely enough, I wasn't at all nervous about that. I guess that's a good thing.

                  Thanks,
                  Cheers, Lee.

There, I think that covers it

Very pleasant to fly. Wasn't very nervous at all. Considering I just put the raptor in and it's someone elses heli and tx'er that says a lot about how the Synergy handles.

                        Quick question...

Do I have to completely seperate the two frames to replace the two main shaft bearings??

                        Cheers

I think they push in like on the Sceadu. You might need to slacken off the frame bolts around the bearing holders, but that should be it (outside of removing the main shaft, obviously )

                            Cheers,
