  • 2.4GHz choices... your comments?

I am stuck with a quandry, I realise that I should take the 'giant leap' into 2.4GHz so I can consider a 450/500 to help my flying progress but as I see it there are 5 options to consider and I am really stuck as to what to do...

    My issues are:

modules - both based on PPM signal from 9C Tx, but cheap(ish) solution. Not keen on the bolt on idea though

DX7 - problem with lack of switch assignment and limited no. channels (will use for plank as well)

10CG - the step on from my 9C so current favorite

DSX9 - most expensive, not familiar with JR

Cant go wrong with the DX7 imo, but I only fly helis.

Its affordable, feels nice and does everything I need.

See if there are any shops where you can have a feel of the Tx, as really they will all do what you need.

spekky for cheaper Rx's .. futaba if ya want a well made system that never has to be touched once its binded ... futaba Rx's are full range and alot smaller than there spekky counterparts .. but for funfly/parkfly stuff and all the bind and fly heli's that are coming to the market then spekky .. Personally if I was going to update my FF7 2.4ghz then it would have to be the new FF10 , not the module based one as I think its ugly ...

I voted for the futaba FASST module.
I've looked at the 10-cg and yes it's a nice radio but not much better than the 9C that you have, A real move forward would be to the 12Z but it's a hell of a lot more money.

I have had a go with both the ff9 and the 10 ... and believe me the difference with em both is chalk and cheese .. .the 10 is sooo nice a radio .. compared to the FF9 that is ... faster response times than the FF9 and 2.4 gives the impression a model feels alot more locked in as well

what sort of fixed wing flying do you do. If its 3d type stuff needing quatro flap then the dx 7 probably wont be enough for you. If its standard plank flying then go for the dx 7 it is a fairly powerfull system and even the smaller rx like the 6100 have a great range to them.

I have a couple of old 3D models that have all sorts of mixes setup up for flap to elevator etc. I also plan to split the elevator and mix that to aileron. Basically I have used the power available in the 9C and I would hate to 'upgrade' to a Tx that cant do what I want. I suspect I would feel this way with the DX7, this is how the DSX9 got added to the mix (albeit an expensive choice!)

The alternative is to go DX7 (as everyone at my club uses them) for the heli and stay with 35MHz on the planks using the 9C. Of course I was hoping to offset some of the cost of upgrading by selling off all my 35MHz bits n bobs... no idea what they are worth though...

Sadly the 12Z is outside of my wallets reach (what am i saying? anything is outside of its reach! hurray for CC's ) But agreed this would be the choice if I could stretch that far. The problem is not only do I have to take into account the Tx cost but also the Rx's that I would need if I sold off the 35MHz.

I thnk the best option might well be a DX7 and keep the 35Mhz for the plank stuff. 35 mhz stuff is dropping in value fast!

Futaba 10c for the simple reason it can do just about anything and you won't need to upgrade again later on. Seen less issues on futaba so I won't recomend spektrum but hey there both good systems

I thought this when I purchased the 9C years and years ago sadly some bu@@er invented 2.4GHz Spread Spectrum... - as for the 9C its been very very good - cant fault it to be honest. Whatever I go for I don't want to have wished I went to a better option in the near future and for it to last in the longer term.

so currently I guess I have 2 real options (better than the 5 i started with),

                      1. The futaba 10CG - its what my heart says I should have and it would certainly do everything I ask for it and I could sell all my 35MHz to help ease the cost.

                      2. The DX7 - use it for heli's keeping the 9C for planks...

i have a FF9 converted to 2.4ghz spectrum module and rx's never had any issues with any off it currently flying a 450 x2 500 and 600 and raptor 30 all on 2.4ghz, only issues fitting in its metal carry case i have to remove the ariel and module at the back where the 35mhz module fits so it can fit in the case no big deal its a habit now
