  • How long have you been Flying Helis

As the title really, i see loads of you posting videos of your flying on the forum, but there is no real indications to how long youve been flying.

What i suppose i would like to know is how good i am and if i am falling behind the "average" flyer out there, i.e i have had the Blade 400 since 3rd July, am hovering tail in and a bit sideways, not nose in, but still prefer to follow the heli around at the moment. LOL.

Had it up about 15 odd ft, and landed successfully, and done a bit of forward flying and spinning round the tail (not at the same time) LOL.

    So am i about average??

    Cheers

    Joe

Joe, I've been 'at it' in one way or another since 2001 and compared to some at my club am still very much a beginner managing the odd loop and roll etc. I enjoy what I do so I'm happy with that. Equally, I don't see myself ever being much of a 3D pilot.

The very best thing you can do to keep the learning curve comfortable and productive is to join a good club. I'm living proof of that...

I started with heli's back in 92 but have had a long break (about 7 years) just getting back into it now!
Todays simulators are great for trying out new tricks before you try with the real thing..
As long as your enjoying flying thats all that counts.

One of the steepest parts of the learning curve is being able to hover. To be able to gain some instinctive feel for the controls and keep the heli in the air.
The next hurdle is learning all the orientations (well, tail-in should be fairly intuitive).

So it sounds like you're progressing right along.

and if you can do it then you have achieved a very important milestone in flying heli

Flying helis around 2 1/2 years.

Coming on fine but I do spend many hours both on the sim and in the field.

I've been flying helis around 18 years now but there's a friend at our club who's only been flying helis for 18 months and he's pushing my flying along, he's doing that well.

It's horses for courses, some seem to pick it up in no time, others have to work at it, as long as you enjoy your flying the level you are at doesn't matter.

Been flying since early July? Well Done m8.

I totally understand that flying a heli is a challenge and you want to see how you are progressing. Well what you are doing is just fine. I am only learning myself and the only advise I can give you is to perfect (and that is strong word) every thing that you learn before moving on. i.e. once you can hover perfectly then move on. The temptation is to move on to new things as quick as you can (as I did), but then your flying is not flying at all, it's throwing the heli into somthing and then catching it, this will never be smooth, controlled or neat unless you perfect every basic move first. I am having to unlearn my flying and start again, very frustrating.

Anyway, keep going, its all about stick time.

I've been flying since January, Im up to the stage of flips, rolls and backward flight, I can do much more on the sim but my nerves get the better of me at the field so progression is slow. I am strict with myself though and make sure I get on the sim every day

6 years for smaill & micro heli's & start of this year for bigger. My skills nose in, rolls/loops extreme speeds mixed with inverted.
Today's outlook is fine for flying.
