  • Trex 700 - Tail Removal

    Howdie,

I approached this subject at the field one day and got a mixed response as to what i want to achive.

The 700 is too long to fit into the boot of my car without folding the back seat. I travel on a Friday afternoon and dont goto the field until Sunday, so the last thing i want is it on show when the car is parked up at night or during the day when in town etc.

If i was to remove the two bolts that hold the tailboom supports, undo the ball link on the control rod and undo the bolts which clamp the boom in place, on re-fitting will it be a simple case of bolting everything back together and go flying?

In theory, nothing mechancial is really changing. I just wanting a few thoughts on this before i go ahead an give it a go. Not the best solution, but the best i can do with the car situation!

    Rgds
    Aidi

yeah should be possible as long as the the boom is back in the same place, not sure if it would wear out the plastic the boom slides into over time though

I have issues with mine, but it just about goes in sideways. I sometimes remove the canopy which shaves off about 3 inches of overall length.

It is a possible way of doing it. I would watch out for the plastic bit in the frame mounted gearbox which key's the boom in place and also making sure you can get the boom back in the heli OK. I have so far needed to take my gearbox out, split it, fit the boom and then put it back in as I am not confident with it being in right.

By how much do you need to reduce the overall length?

I thought about that as well, but there isnt a new car I would want at the moment.

Get a Volvo Estate ( i'm on my third Volvo in 18 years!!!) - you can fit in there a 1/4 scale (joking). But 700 will fit in there easily. Of course, if image is important as well then it is a different story.

Align Trex 1750 (Figure it out)
            = 700 + 600+450 (?)

            Cheers

Even with the Canopy off it's still too long i'm afraid, and changing cars is not an option!!

              Yep your maths is right!

                  Hi Aidi,
If you wanted to take the boom section off, then re-assemble it at the field that would work. As was already said, providing the boom goes back in exactly the same place all should be well. The boom supports will help in re-positioning, then just check the gear mesh and you should be good to go. If the tail servo is boom mounted you won't need to worry about the control rod, if not then the only issue will be disconnecting the servo lead. If you arrange that in your setup and maybe use one of those plastic connector security clips.
I'm sure you can sort it.
                  Mike.

I'm not sure about you guys, but i find that i have to remove the whole taile unit with front tt gears before i can get the boom out, and doing that will also make sure you dont start wearing out the plastic or not put it in back in the right place. Its only the same amount of bolts to remove, and i find it much easier

Not that Im an expert but would it not be an idea to keep the heli in one piece and transport it to the field in a fasion like Dave in the roof box? Just a thought Aidi.

Transporting it is not the problem, its the fact that it would be visible when the car is parked over the weekend with the heli in it. I have no where to put it between leaving where i live on a Friday and flying on the Sunday.

Removal of the tail is the only option available to me to keep it out of sight when the car is parked overnight or in the town during the day

I quite often take the boom off his way when working on the heli as it makes it much easier to move around.
It's a few more bolts than undoing the boom clamp but you can be sure it goes back in the same place each time.
Undo boom brace, un clip ball link then take out the 8 bolts holding the entire tail drive and clamp assembly then carefully ppry the frames apart and slide the whole unit out.

do that mant times to my 600, just take off the hole rear box, undo the brace and pop th link off, works fine when you put it bk

I can go with that. I guess doing it that way will ensure that the boom goes back on in exactly the same position.

I think ill give this option a try opposed to my original train of thought.
