  • Kontronik Jive HV esc

I'm thinking of getting myself a kontronik jive esc but I have a few questions to ask before I go ahead and splash out.

    1) I've heard that the governor isn't too smooth at high voltage, is this true? Or have they resolved this with the new firmware? How does the governor compare to the Jazz?
    2) Why does the HV version only rated for 5s to 12s? will it not work with voltage under 16v?
    3) How reliable is the BEC? Anyone had any problems? Is it strong enough to handle even the most amp hungry servos coupled with flybarless tech?
    4) This is probably down to personal opinion - is it worth it price wise?

I have a jive 80 HV on a trex 600 running 8s as does Noel from skids and skills( he recommended the setup, which is praise enough in my books).

    1) the governor has been faultless so far for me and for others flying my heli doing hard 3d with it.
    2) not sure but from what i remember HV stands for high voltage so maybe that answers that.
3)im running BLS451 servos off the BEC and again no issues after 4mths etc.
    4) huummm..you have to make your own mind up on value. its is very expensive but so far i have to say it has performed perfectly. Im not aware of a better ESC on the market today.

Which firmware version do you have? And What motor are you using your Jive with?

Hmm, now to decide if i want the HV or LV .... in my ideal world I'd buy both!

EDIT: Doh! just realised you have the motor you use in your signature

Hint: If you buy it, get both programming cards (prog Card I and II). This applies to Jive.
The 2nd card lets you change governor parameters and ESC voltage (5..6 V in 0.2 V steps).

The Jive has one annoying feature, and that is it shuts down on overcurrent, no recovery possible during flight.
It is not a problem if the heli is set up correctly. But if you're experimenting (especially with motors that have a too high Kv and / or are too small), be prepared for some autos.

For 8s you need the HV version.

Has the overcurrent shutdown been fixed in the version 5 firmware?

I've got version 5 and managed to trip it.
It's not really a bug, even though people make it look like one. They did this intentionally.

An ESC shutdown still beats a burning ESC.
Search the web for burnt Jazz ESCs (which don't have the protection), then compare with the number of burnt Jives. There are few - the Jive is relatively "foolproof".

Someone measured the threshold around 140 amps. Assuming resistive losses, the heat dissipated in the ESC at that point has increased by a factor of three! (140^2/80^2 = 3).

If you don't like it, buy YGE instead. I once tried to stop my 700's rotor during the softstart, when the YGE ESC accidentally started after re-plugging a wire. Nitro reflexes taking hold, grabbed the blade grip and held it... it was a BAD idea. This ESC knows no pity

The bec is top notch- can't recall anyone complaining about the performance even on 90 sized FBL machines, I've done hundreds of flights on a logo 600 FBL/ jr 8717 without a glitch. Fitted a DCup at first to measure the volt drop and it hardly moved- it'll power whatever you can throw at it

I don't think I'll be pushing the Jive hard enough for it to shut down

Now to decide which Jive to get!
