  • Lucky escape - 1st flip

Was feeling particularly brave this afternoon and on my 2nd flight after practicing stall turns (albeit rather poor ones) I decided to bite the bullet so to speak and go for a flip - never done this before. I forgot that the previous week I have tinkered with my governor/idle up setting to put them all on 1 switch and so with my old governor switch set and in normal mode I pulled back and over she went, fed in some negative (only a 2 or 3 degrees as thats all I have in normal mode) at which point of course with the governor not actually engaged the engine went back to just above idle -

luckily I had the foresight to do the manouver at some height and the old Hyper picked up the RPM quite quickly with the full +ve pitch blades beating the air into submission as it came out at the bottom - about 10 feet up (similar height to my heart at the time and my adrenaline levels!). Had to land it to calm down.

lesson learned - cant wait to have another go now

The best way I think if it helps is to get the heli into a climb then mid stick & roll you should get the purfect roll then once you've mastered that then start giving some negative pitch.
Today's outlook is fine for flying.

Your right but it hangs off Ch.7 and wasnt actually enabled for it disable when throttle dropped below 25% or whatever it is with the TJ Pro... I think if this had been the case then I would have ended up with more head speed as the governor would have been active until the cut off where as my linear throttle curve dropped the throttle as soon as I lowered the pitch.

Just tried to replicate the event on Phoenix and it does seem to loose a lot less height when compared to the real thing... perhaps my head speed is lower than the sport Raptor 50 on the sim...

Well took the oportunity to pop up the field this evening and to my surprise there was no-one there and it was warm and still(ish)
Anyway got one flight in before being eaten alive my mozzies got the better of me and during that flight i did some more rather rubbish stall turns in both directions and then chucked it in IDL2 and tried another backwards flip - paused for a fraction of a second inverted to prove I could climb inverted and finished the flip. Much better than the heart stopping one last time and I finished higher than I started
really pleased with myself now - I hope I have pushed through my seeing £'s instead of pushing myself.

A fellow club member wanted a picture of me hovering my 600N inverted for the club website so I lifted off and rolled inverted, no problem. When he'd taken the pictures I pulled the stick back to climb inverted and that was the point at which I discovered than I was still in normal mode While I was hovering inverted I was just above the governors activation point but as soon as I went to climb out the engine started to fade, luckily I had enough time to roll out.

Blimey - it does go to show just how much energy is stored in the rotors though not that I really want to test it again

I bet lots of people have similar experiences though...

Well done, great flying. I was reading that and I could feel the panic starting to setting well with me anyhow. Great control at the end with the near auto
