  • Raptor 50 v3 Set up

Hi, Ive just got back into nitro heli's and have been thinking of the following set up:

    RAPTOR 50 V3 KIT
O.S. MAX 50SX-H Ring Hyper Engine
    Gyro GY401 AVCS
    Futaba FF7 S148x4 R168DF (35Mhz)

Is the Gyro suitable for this helicopter?. Is there anything better, also cant decide on a reciver. The Futaba comes with S148x4 servo's are these man enough for the job for a 50 heli?

The blades that come with the kit dont look all that good... Any one no of a good set of blades that wont brake the bank?

    Cheers

While it's not the latest gyro, the 401 is still a good "known" quantity unit and will let you do pretty well up to the point where you want to try fast backwards flight or very hard 3D work. The servos however are not anywhere near enough. Try the Futaba S3152 servos for the main controls and you'll need a dedicated tail servo like an S9254 or similar to match the GY401 on the tail. None of the above kit is top of the line, nor is it a load of rubbish, it's good middle of the road "will work fine for a sport flyer" kit. For a receiver make sure you have a PCM model in preference to PPM - it's always good to have a fail-safe.

For blades I like NHP's blades (see Revolution Models) as they are good value and work nicely.

    Kind regards

    Chris

Personally I wouldn't be buying a new 35MHz set right now, there are too many good reasons to go for 2.4.

If this is a 2nd hand cost saving measure or kit you've already got then perhaps, but I'd still think twice about it.

I'd also look at the Raptor 50 Titan SE kit as it is the current version with a number of worthwhile upgrades for about the same price. There is a combo version with a Redline 53 engine and muffler that also comes with blades and a governor, may be worth checking the price on that as well.

This like all the other Raptors is mechanical mix. The 3152 is not going to drive the collective for very long before it craps out. Get at least a 9252 on there.

forget the 401, had it's time. get the align 750 if your on a budget with an align 620 servo. forget the 9254, those are merely failures waiting to happen.

forget the ff7 35mhz setup, just go right to 2.4ghz and don't look back. since your buying it all new anyway no point buying things that are being phased out. goto your local club and see what they fly and see what suits. i suspect you will end up with a dx7 or ff7 2.4.

as others say, get yourself better servos, those are not what you want. 9252 if not a good servo anymore compared to price of rivals. you would do well putting all align servos in the heli. 610's on all surfaces and a 620 on tail.

          cheers

Putting price aside it was the power of the servo and the output shaft being supported by 2 bearings that are important for the collective servo on the Raptor. For the price though the Aligns can't be beaten. I have a mental block to Align. lol.

for the money you might as well get the gp750 gyro and 620 servo combo then 610 servos for the rest. (thats what ive got on my raptor 30)

agreed with everyone else, dont bother with 35mhz go straight for 2.4 - there are always dx7s second hand turning up here in the sale section.

My Raptor 50 v2 has the 401 with a 9254 and its a great combination. Its been flying since 2000/2001 so I dont think there are issues with longevity (if you run it at 4.8v 4 cell Rx pack). I have 9252's on cyclic and collective and they are great but havent these been superceded by the 9255 or something? As has been mentioned the 401 is getting long in the tooth but they are still a good heading hold gyro If I did it again now I would probably go with a Spartan, as for servo's probably Align due to the high cost of digi Futaba servos. The Hyper 50 is a great engine, I got mine when they were brand new (and expensive!).

In fact if I did it all again now I wouldnt go with the Raptor - its getting long in the tooth itself. I would go with a T-Rex 600 SNP and as such would have everything needed in the box apart from the receiver and Tx. For that I would go with either a 2.4GHz Futaba 7C or Spektrum DX7.

                  Gyro servo combo....

CSM720 and Align 620 do a half decent job.... and thats about 160 pounds and you'll be hard pushed to find a better combo IMO for the money....

Thats 401 and 9254 money really....

servos Savox are the same as align and Savox are what 27 pounds without align written on them ? (could be wrong on servo name...) so save 13 pounds a servo there for a start!

My poor Raptor 50 hack has 9252 on pitch/ 3050 elevator/ 3152 airelon and 3001 on throttle CSM 720 gyro and Align 620 on tail... Kind of flys okay....

Nothing wrong with the Raptor old they are but a solid lump as well, ideal for learning on IMO

Looks good. If you go for the 'kit' version of the 50 Titan SE do remember it doesn't come with any blades.

Also check out the price of the kit at Leeds Models as when I got mine they were a lot cheaper than anyone else.

align 610's on the head are unreal, i've got them on my 600 and they take some beating for the money and i have had them for a while now.

Agreed.. DS610s are spot on, a bit noisey but when its 20ft in the air over the sound of the muffler you arent going to hear them

i'm glad someone else thinks they are noisy why is that, why can one manufacturer make quiet servos (futaba) and another make them sound like they have iron fillings inside.
