I'm also mode 1,I find no trouble controlling heli's with this mode but I would agree that if you are just starting to learn rc heli's/planks you would be better off going with mode 2,only because most people seem to fly that mode.
You could always be different & not follow the crowd & go mode 1,it's really what feels right for you.

I have found that if you strip most Txs' down there is enough lead to change stick assignments. The mode ones' could be changed to mode twos' by swopping the stick assemblies over.
Mode 2 does seem more natural, every fighter I flew or sat in had the throttle on the left which meant the stick (ailerons/elevator) was in your right hand. Rudder of course at your feet. However the advise to go with what your local club fly is good. It does save a lot of crashes if you swop models!

You'd also have to change the trims if you swopped over the cables.
Most modern sets can be set electronically and by moving a plate that depresses the return spring for the throttle.
