  • 3D flying - where to start?

    Hello guys,

Been flying since January this year but really would like to start learning some 3d stuff with a view to perhaps even compete one day.

I can do loops, rolls, some untidy tick tocks and inverted hovering but that's about it at the moment.

My question is; how do you learn this type of stuff? I can do a lot better on the sim but then when I goto the field it's totally different so I never seem to be progressing. Perhaps it's my setup as on Phoenix sim all the heli's are setup to perfection of course. I use the thumbs on sticks method which someone said is not the best for 3d.

Just some tips and general advice, perhaps anyone who is profficient at 3d could give me some advice on how to get started and what kind of things I should be practicing. I'm willing to put the hours in, just a bit lost where to start.

    Thanks for reading.

EDIT: A quick vid of my 2nd flight with my 500. Was still setting up the pitch correctly but gives a general pic of where I'm at:

There are some flight training vids within phoenix and real flight, they are worth a look.
    Lots of sim time, etc.
The best way i find to learn is to fly with more experienced flyers, when i do i always pick up new things, and then have a go myself, good way to learn.
If you have not already try to find a local helicopter club and you will get lots of guidence and help.
Little steps is the way, don't try to do it all at once, it will all fall in to place over time

Looks like your flying is coming on really good

When you mention that you can hover inverted, can you hover inverted in all orientations? as that will be a great start with progressing into more advanced 3D,

But what i tend to do is set up a phoenix model that flies very close to what my Heli flies like, then i practice practice and practice till i can proficiantly do it in the sim, then i take it to the real world, and hey presto!

Though thats what suits me, you may want to try it in the sim a little then work on it in real life, and then go back to the sim and learn a little more

But at the moment you seem like you have started somewhere by starting on tic tocs, so i would continue to practice them

Tho, they do require some good collective management, but with practice you will get there

and then maybe once you can proficiantly do them, try them sideways on (ailerone tictocs)

Always have an escape route planned incase you get in trouble, for example if i was low to the ground and was 45 degrees inverted, i would flip fully inverted to a hover, instead of flipping forward and risking a tail strike on the ground

So hovering in all orientations greatly helps

Hope this helps a bit, and keep us updated with videos

Thanks for the replies so far. I can hover best nose on. Not sure why but I can do tail on but I find it harder to work out which way the heli is drifting tail on. Yeah, the tick tocks in that vid are bad as I had way too much pitch and the tail kicked out. I went down to the field Sunday and did some good tick tocks and also tried the sideways one's but they were a bit dodgy. Escape plan sounds good, not thought of that before. I guess I am trying to jump before I can even walk, it's just so frustrating to watch vids of the Szabo's and then goto the sim and not be able to do anything similar. I'll get some more sim time in with inverted hovers and then perhaps try to do inverted forward flight and go from there. Need to rebuild the 500 now though thanks to a huge expensive smash on Sunday.

        Thanks again.

Wow you seem to be progressing hugely! Your flying looks really good for someone who only started 6 months ago - I wish! I had progressed to any of the manouvers you list above.
