  • Where to test fly heli's, Part 2

I previously posted a question re test flying / running up / hovering heli's in your local park or green. At that stage someone also posted a note about being chased away by police while flying in a park in Sutton, I think. The general consensus is really to join a club and my next post was where I could test run etc in SW London, as i live in Southfields. Epsom / Epsom down seems the closest amd most obvious choice.

However, I started doing research about the by-laws in my Borough (Wandsworth) and lately also about The Wimbledon / Putney Common by-laws, as well as those of Richmond Park. Needless to say I contacted both the Wandworth parks and Wimb / Putney Common authorities. Effectively, one is discouraged from the many Wandsworth parks even though there is no by-law prohibiting this or covering this, as what you would find for Sutton or Richmond park or any other. The reasons are understandable of course bla bla bla, from their point of view. Then, the Common by-laws, from what i read, actually do make allowance subject to provisions as set out by the guys there. So, to me it reads as if they would allocate a small space, subject maybe to certain times etc etc. When enquiring, I was told that the by-laws do not make any provision at all. Anyway, I didnt want to challenge this and I do understand, especially since it is a conservancy. But then I wonder why the by-laws are on the website and / or not updated.

My whole enquiry process is really to find out where i can quickly pop down to in order to do a test hover or run, especially with my outdoor models, without having to travel that far ( I live in Southfields). My next enquiry went to Richmond Park, as I have heard and read in their by-laws that there is a specific area set out for this - model aircraft flying etc. I have had no response yet - as to whether this is in fact so and where this area is. To me, it seems this may be the closest where i could go.

So, if anyone in this forum knows about flying in Richmond Park, then please let me know. And, if anyone wants to know more about my other 2 enquiries, I will be happy to banter on about that! :-)

    Thanks

Others will no doubt challenge me, but, as I understand it, if there is no by-law specifically against flying it is OK to do so.

BUT, and it is a big BUT, you have to do so safely and if in a public park there is no-where where you can reasonably go out of the general view or route of the public the chances are that you would be endangering them. But if you can find a quiet area, and you have a spotter who can warn you & the public then that would be 'reasonable'.

Who could really complain if you found a quiet area, away from houses & the normal routes through the park and simply tested or hovered a heli, especially with a spotter.

    BMFA insurance of course.

      Hi David,

Thanks for your input; I totally agree with your comments and that is exactly my point. People taking up this sport / hobby, I would imagine, are generally conscientious people and would only it carry out in a SAFE manner - quiet area, adhere to common sense, BMFA guidelnes and insurance and so forth etc.

Anyway, I will continue my search!

          Hi troubledpetey,

Ha ha, yeah I reacall now! It was your post that prompted me to do my own research. Most other boroughs or councils have the same by-laws like Sutton, but like I said, Wandsworth have none.

          Will defs let you know!

LOL!!! I have actually seen guys with so-called "park flyers" in one of the small parks just behind Merton road a few times now, normally on an off-beat area and when its quieter! I spoke to them and they say that they have never been confronted by the Parks Police. So, I may give it a try too, even if it is with one of my CX helis.

If you live down in Sutton, isnt it easy to get to Epsom Downs? I hear / understand one can fly / test etc there just willy-nilly? I work in Sutton and often thoight of trying that, taking my heli to work and get down to the Downs.

Aaaargggg! All these &^%$£ rules. I thought one could just go and fly down there and thats not being part of the club. Better hunt for that quiet safe spot then mate and join the nearest club to me. Its just frustrating, being a beginner I want to practice hovering etc with my outdoor heli's etc. Maybe one should get acquanted with a farmer and use a piece of his land. Will keep on lookin'.
