  • Full Size Heli

Our flying site is an old WW2 airfield which is still owned by the MOD. The runways have long gone and the only people who have keys to the site are us and a farmer who grazes a few cattle up there, but the miltary still very occasionally use it for training.

A few of us were up there this evening and were just packing up as it got dark, when a bleedin great Sikorsky flew over low, banked steeply and came into a hover about 50 metres away from us and 20 metres off the ground, pointing straight at us - like I was flying nose-in!

They sat there in the hover for a couple of minutes and then sat it down on the field for a few minutes more before taking off, and disappearing off into the distance sideways!

I was well impressed - big heli and loads of noise. We often see small attack helis around the field, but not very often stuff as big as this.

Had a Sikorsky come over my house a couple of days ago that low that you could see the blokes standing at the back by the cargo ramp, that's presuming it was a sikorsy, certain looked like a 6 bladed affair and fantastic noise. Wouldn't have minded them landing in the back garden tho I doubt it would have fitted

Not surprised you saw apaches at Keevil airfield, we used to use it for underslung load and heli marshalling training when I was in the AAC.

What you probably saw was a Merlin, its the only RAF and navy helicopter with a rear door other than the chinook.

Pumas have side doors, as do Sea kings.

We often get the local air ambulance or police helicopter landing in our village, I will hook out a couple of pictures and post when I can find them.

                    Found them
