  • Where not to fly!!

Someone sent me this link of a guy flying in a built up area - I think this guy was incredibly lucky as nobody got hurt but is a good example of WHERE NOT TO FLY!!!! Anything can happen.

His torque tube tail drive failed apparently.

    >> WHERE NOT TO FLY!!!!
    * In a toy shop, unless you're pretty darn sure what you're doing
    * anywhere between North and South Korea. You may get nuked.
    * over a lake that's deeper than you can dive
    * in a circus tent, while the lion tamer is doing his thing. Cats are easily distracted

    where else?

We've had heli flying in the sauna during a Finland-wide heli "congress".
Flight times are shorter than ususal because the blades melt.
                Poor little "quark" thing!

PS I was elsewhere. I have an alibi ...

I have to agree anyone flying in a built up area is asking for trouble. I'd lump in garden flyers here to because it doesn't take much for an out of control heli to gain a lot of height and pile into someone elses garden. I know a few of you here have done / do fly in gardens and it might ruffle a few feathers but you really are taking quite a risk.

Definately stupid, but a damn good bit of flying, then there is the align vid of Alan in a car park testing out a 500 with cars driving past,. again what are these people thinking. when they start and go.

When I fly in my garden I always have my shotgun loaded next to me just in case I have a fly away, by the time it hits the deck it will be in a thousand tiny pieces anyway.

                              >> for an out of control heli
just as a hint (seriously - some people may never have thought it through):
On all but the cheapest transmitters you can configure a switch as "throttle hold". When turned on, the motor shuts down, but you can still fly the heli, as much as momentum allows. Usually those crashes are even very cheap, because headspeed decays exponentially. In the first fraction of a second, it loses most of its energy.

Then: Most Rxes allow configuring a failsafe mode. Set it up properly and test it (turn off the Tx). Again, the motor should shut down.

With that in mind, the risk of an out-of-control e-heli is rather small, unless the pilot panics (and watch out for small kids picking up your Tx).
                              With nitro it's different.
