  • Tree surgery...

I'm looking for a heli that will be good for cutting branches off trees about 50ft above.

My idea was that I attach several razor blades to the leading edges of both main blades. Take the heli up to the desired height and slowly give cyclic to the branch I wish to cut.

Do you think I'll need something like the Gyrobot / Helicommand to keep the heli stable when cutting ?

If it's covered by the ANO article 74 it's actually against the law. Your insurance if you are covered by the BMFA would be invalid, in short a non-starter. I couldn't see you getting any other insurance either. Nutcase is a word that comes to mind. I also think you would struggle with depth of field from that distance.

Not to **** on your fire but in the bmfa handbook, having sharp leading edges to a rotor is a real big no no, if something happened i think your insurance would be invalid, and you are also not allowed to do anything that could through your actions endanger persons or aircraft.

Yes, if you simply take the shrouds from a Flymo, add some radio gear I'd say that'd do it.

Not quite sure what you'll need in the way of a tail rotor but perhaps you can use that to defoliate prior to performing the surgery. That way you'll be able to see what you're cutting.

I've got a spare Flymo in the shed, if I could wire up some lipo or A123 I reckon it would do the job.

                  On the other hand...

How about I add some extensions to the main rotors of a heli, since they're extensions ( with razors ) I should be covered by BMFA?

I thought it would be a good idea to add an FPV system too.

My last 'beer gardening' experince left me rushed to hospital with a few fingers hanging off - no joke! And they wouldn't give me any pain killers as I had too many drugs in my system.

Yeah, razors would do the job. However, a Samurai sword or two would be better. With a little tweaking of the blade profile I'm sure you could get the required lift from them. Look very nice glinting in the mid-day sun too.

I like the sword idea! Lots!

I've a few spare from my days of martial arts. I'll see what I can do, not sure how well they'll balance though.

Surely a set of 45 foot high platform shoes and a sturdy set of shears would do?

You clearly haven't thought this through fully!!
