Fuel tank for my flight box

Hi guys

You may have seen my flight box thread. Following advice in that thread, I'm planning to mount my fuel "can" outside of the box and run all the lines on the outside, thus avoiding any fuel spillage inside the box.

I have a couple of questions:

1) I'm considering buy a 5 litre fuel can like the one pictured and mounting it on the outside of my box. Does anybody do this or does everyone just use the container in which the fuel is supplied for storage?



2) Whichever way I go, do I need to buy a special cap with supply and vent lines?
3) Do you use a clunk inside the storage tank?
4) Do I need a filter in the supply line somewhere and, if so, whereabouts in the line?

most folks i see just use the bottles the fuel comes in as you can buy ready made caps for them, you will need a clunk line in either case

I just use the bottles my fuel come in. I have got an Optifuel cap to go on the top which allows me to connect my fuel pipes to the pump. In side the bottle I run a line of fuel pipe with a clunk on the bottom that has an inbuilt filter.

I used to have a Thunder Tiger field box that had a seperate tank for fuel and to be honest, it was a royal pain in the butt transfering fuel to it and was just plain messy. Fuel everywhere!!!

If you're considering decanting the fuel from the suppliers bottle into your own - the best type you could get is a metal container. They don't suffer from the condensation issues that plastic bottles can do - and condensation isn't great for your fuel...
It's not a majot problem, obviously, but I thought it worth suggesting if you are looking at an alternative container - consider a metal one

Thanks for the advice guys. The steel 5L containers are about £20 so I'll pass on those for now. Good advice tho Rob - thanks.

I take the point about decanting being messy. Perhaps I'll stick with the supplied container.

I'll buy a clunk filter too.

steel containers do rust.... not good and they conduct electricity, there have been several fires caused by shorting batteries on metal tins ( with fuel in), again not good.
As for condensation, if damp air gets in - the moisture is there regardless of whether its in a metal or plastic bottle.......
