  • A Story about A Twister Storm

It all starts well.. It was my first heli and i took my first steps with it.. So since i started flying the 600 (almost 3 months) i only took her out twice, in which it was crashed in under 10 seconds each time, once because i was too slow to react and the second the gyro fell off, so its fifty fifty blame wise between me and her ..

It was frustrating however and i just left it to gather dust and concentrated on flying the nitro.. Then after a few chats with Eddie and Boggy and some very valuable advice I decided to give it another go..

After all it has a special place in my heart.. So last week i took it out.. and behold!! she hovers alright!! she didn't bury herself in the ground, so took the TG off and flown 2 batteries.. Hovering and sort of moving it about a bit and i was a very happy boy..

I was still flying around some sort of setup issues, nonetheless, there was no complaining on my part .. For the first time in months i took her out and returned home and she's still in one piece.. Then i took it with me to Midland Heli Flyin.. And yesterday morning while waiting for things to kick off, Edders gave me a masterclass in perfect mechanical setup and guess what it does fly nicer now .. And in the hands of Mike it even went inverted for a bit

Please keep in mind that at this stage i only hover, and slide it right to left with a little bit of nose turn..

But let's backtrack a bit and see how my flying has progressed in the last few weeks.. Well i think i've nailed tail in hovering now! and been working on lazy 8's for a 2-3 weeks.. But can't get any joy.. I do a decent charity ribbon shape (lol!) with good control but once i turn to complete the 8 my heli just buggers off into the distance.. These T-rex's don't need an excuse to fly away.. But my problem has nothing to do with being handed i can do that maneuver in both directions but never complete the 8.

So at the flyin i had a few flights and didn't really get anywhere.. More of the same.. Anyhow, spend most of the other flights tweaking my Tx curves and tuning my engines (well trying) ..

Don't get me wrong, i had a fantastic day but somehow i was disapointed that i didn't achieve anything flying wise.. So almost time to go home and i decide to get the twister out and have a couple of flights.. All ready to go and up she goes.. And what do you know, a little hover then i flick it into idle up and fly the perfect lazy 8!!! then i hover it and do another one..

Can you see my face?.. yup that's it a big smile.. But in the process it has drifted forward and to the left and i usually bring back my helis tail in.. but what do i do? I just turned it around and flown it towards me before i whipped the tail round and hovered it just to my right!! (hahahahahahah!!!!) Oh yes!!

Seriously i couldn't contain my excitment.. Oh come on Mojo let's have another lazy eight.. Well!.. Why not?.. And then i do it.. and it was faster then halfway through the second the heli got a bit quick and low and there was nothing i could do to save it.. so i shut the throttle, the heli hits ground and bits fly off!! but it still did the funky chicken dance then i flicked Th hold!!

Ahh!! you muppet! shutting the throttle does nothing when you're in idle up.. A good lesson for next time for sure.. Well you live and learn!

I don't think i even flinched or panicked when it hit the deck, all that occupied my mind is just one thought! I can do it! And that was that!..
I don't know what it was, was i not ready to do the manuver until that moment?, or was it because i took a risk with the 400 that i didn't want to take with the 600.. Whatever it is, it worked for me..

So another rebuild is waiting on the table, but this time it won't be a frustration build.. I'm gonna rebuild my little boundry pushing flying machine

And to Eddie, Boggy and Edders.. Thank you guys for all your help and time.. Much much appreciated..

Sorry for the long post.. Hope you enjoy reading it as i've enjoyed crashing.. umm.. writing it

    Cheers,

Well, Mo, I don't know whether to say well done or how sad!

I think on balance, it's got to be well done! TBH, if you bin a heli, but have learned something good doing it, well, it's got to be worth it.

I'm so jealous you met Ron & Eddie - one day, guys!

But you obviously made such brilliant progress, all in one go, it's got to be worth it. Keep up the good work, mate, and your excellent posts.

      Thanks mate..

Well you don't have to be jealous mate.. I haven't met them yet, so in this regard we're both waiting for the day

I took it well mate, as we have said before, if i would have crashed it and not learned something it would have been annoying at the least

Remember! making omelettes and breaking eggs

Edit: And you did a circuit Brian.. I don't have the guts yet!

Well it seems the Twister did not go down in vain after all.. Was out flying tonight and finally managed a half decent lazy 8 with the 600..

Still a bit reluctant on the rudder when i try more than one and it's soon flies sideways.. But will keep practicing.. It's so hard to keep a controlled constant height maneuver for long as the Rex doesn't need much of an excuse to fly away (very far!!)..

Thanks phil, I have started the rebuild tonight (yet again ).. As you say, it's amazing how one good flight (although ending in a crash) re-ignited my love for that heli.. Now i can't wait to get it flying again..

That is how it looked after the smack..

Did the usual + a few unusual parts survived (blades and tail shaft).. The damage is belt, servo gears (all round), main shaft, spindle, boom (snapped), Horizontal fin, flybar and a metal blade grip!!

Well that is what happens i know now when you hit the ground in idle up

                            Thanks Grant,

Well the Main gear seems fine.. The only nuisance is having to take the frame apart to replace the belt (unless there is a cunning way of doing it without having to).. But i'll have to finish the whole job and spin it up, then i'll probably find something else that needs doing (isn't it always the way!! :)..

You shouldnt have to take the frame apart, just loosen the 4 screws that clamp the boom.

Put half the tail case on the boom, then put the belt on (make sure it isnt twisted) I normally get some string and pull the belt through to make sure it doesnt twist, then put the top haf of the tail case back on and tighten it all up.

Then slide the boom in, you should have enough slack to hook the belt over the gears, pull the boom back to tighten the belt and screw the clamp screw.
