  • Do I need a header tank?

I have been thinking about putting header tanks on my 600 and 700. Is there any advantage to having them?

Put it this way, my 700 used to cut-out doing an inverted climbout till a header tank was fitted. Most 700's at fly-ins and competitions seem to have them as well.

If you are thinking of doing any inverted or 3d flying then a header tank is an essential, I would put one on anyway just for the extra fuel to extend flying time.

Yes, I would recommend to use one, see it this way too, use it as a reserve to the main tank! The times I've come close to running out of fuel, only to be saved by the header tank!

I had no problems running the whole tank out on my 700, problem was I had a habit of using the last drops of fuel while inverted 60ft up I fitted a header tank just to give me more of a warning I'm about to run out of fuel, that's all.

Never run any of mine with a header tank and never had any issues with fueling

The fact that you have 2 clunk lines and a trap for air in the header tank can only add assurance that you won't ingest air in to the engine when inverted. Such a simple and low-cost addition to a heli makes great sense if you are planning inverted or 3D flying.

I'm running a crankcase pressure system with a regulator and this will happily suck (push?) the last drop of fuel out of the tank with the engine running sweetly throughout. Since fitting the header tank I have noticed this is actually collecting some air fed from the main tank, probably due to the vibration levels, this would be of more use if just running muffler pressure.
