  • Spending money on the latest helis.

I see several threads regarding the latest helicopters coming out (Outrage/Synergy N5/Vision 50 etc) and an equal amount of people stating they have already put orders in or pre-ordered.

If you have already got helicopters of various sizes "eg" 50 or 90 size are you flying those to the limits or getting the best out of them..

I very much doubt it and unless you are not affected by the current recession what is the fascination that drives you want these latest toys when you havent even seen them and money is tight.

Not a dig at anyone here but as an individual I would never commit myself to putting pen to paper until I have read reviews by people who have bought and tried them.

    Debate.

I will be the first one that will admit that I'm mostly throwing money down the drain when it comes to our hobby.

This being my first true hobby ever... I've gone into it in style. My collection of helis and the best tools money can buy is embarrassing to say the least.

But will I stop? No I might spend less even though the urge to buy the latest piece of kit is overwhelming. I've pre-ordered the Outrage 50n even though I've got a 600n of which I'm scared of crashing due the expense of repairing it.

So what drives me then to spend all this money to get the latest kit? I love building, tinkering and learning about the technology. Flying the heli is just the reward for spending vast amount of time in front of the computer or at your bench building and repairing.

Well the factory pilots are there for a reason Brian but agree with your comments.

Sponsored pilots will always paint a bright picture as expected but I always read reviews first from others.

Trust you to start the bun fight Tim lol....
It was a bit of a tricky situation for me to be fair, my youngest Harry is now able to hover around his 450 but his learning is suffering because of the weather, i.e. same problem as Ashley had, because he also had a 450 they both struggled with the wind, Harry still does and it cuts his flying time alot.
Can't let him have a go on my vision as it is set-up to aggressive and the same with ashleys 600 so i am going to buy a new 50 and then let harry have my vision with cheeper equipment in it.
When i did this for ashley it meant his flying suddenly improved over night almost, now he can fly his beam in the wind no probs.
I am very happy with my fleet now, love the aurora and 700, and my rave is a supperb park flyer but i will always want a 50 size as my main nitro thrash tool.
As for the resesion, it doesn't effect us all, just happens that in my line of buisiness the work is still a plenty

My reckoning is that people will try these new helis but will end up deferring back to the one they had in the first place. The Vibe 50 is a good heli but too expensive and the N5 will probably be the same. A hardcore of those that probably don't fly that often or push the envelope/risk but want top quality will buy those kinds of helis. No sign of the Beam 50 yet so that leaves the Outrage 50 which, as tim says, is unproven.

I think if you have the money then buy what you want. It's up to the individual and keeps forums alive and interesting with new info. I personally realised (eventually!) the only way to improve is to buy lots of fuel/batteries and fly what ive got. I honestly don't believe that any of the latest 50 airframes will be better than the last as it basically boils down to the gear you put in it.

It's an interesting time for our hobby.

Sadly those photos of an almost naked heliaddict writhing in the contents of his first batch avant aurorra kit have been victim of the hackers at least temporarily, but they truely explain why people pr-order stuff

If you don't pre-order the latest and get the very first kit with all the faulty bits in it you won't be able to throw your toys out and rubbish them in a few weeks time
you will also be able to post on here about how rare the spares are and how you are afraid to fly your new baby.
By pre-ordering, like it (was) with posh cars, you may just be able to sell your kit on at a profit to someone who has this habit really bad, missed out and is going cold turkey.

But you cannot deny how nice it might be to produce a heli at your crowded club and have everyone crowd round it making you the centre of attention.
...remember Ash and Trev assembling a trex700 on the grass at 3DM?

Like you I will beware the hype, this forum sucks you in! I intend to keep the fuel cost and bling costs in reasonable proportion...and at my club there is no crowd of drooling onlookers anyway. Raptors are cutting edge here!

I know there are alot of people out there that are suffering and i do feel sorry for them, i have been there before struggling from one pay day to the next, but i have made sacrafices for my hobby, i own a crappy car compared to what i normanly own, sold my motor bike, i don't drink anymore so no nights down the pub and i don't waste money on clothes etc etc.
I love this hobby, and i admit i like buying the lastest kit, can't help myself but with 2 lads that now also are keen, expecially Ashley is a real heli addict, i know it is going to cost me alot of money over thnext year or so, not for me but for my boys, in fact i expect my son ashley will be a better pilot than me as he is so young to still learn, my youngest is more interested in scale helis.

As for the what makes me buy before it is out, i honestly don't know, i was going to buy a new 50 what ever over the summer as what i said before but why did i pick this one (outrage) i don't know, i think maybe what swung it was the spares pricing, was at one point keen on the N5 but i can see that being pricy
