  • First time flying at a club.

After getting my 500 back in the air I decided I should really find a club. There is a club in Newbury, well just outside actually, where I live so I though I should give them a try first. I went up there yesterday with the 500, after speaking with the member secretary, and met some of the people and hovered a couple of packs through so they could see what level I am at.

First impressions are they seem like a decent bunch with a fair mix of fixed and rotary wing and the site is really nice, well kept with good visability and hardly any trees at all. I actually found it easlier to fly there as I was able to fully concertrate on what I was doing instead of having to worry about other people randomly walking past with dogs, young children etc. in the local parks.

The only problem was the place is surrounded by oil seed rape so I need to use my red canopy as the yellow one was hard to see at low levels..

Can't wait to go back and I would advise anyone at my level to go to a club, it might cost you a bit for membership but to have a dedicated flying space where everyone is fully aware of what's going on and happy to offer advice is well worth it IMO..

    thanks for reading.

Not sure about membership spaces but when I spoke to them they did not say there were no spaces...

I've been to my club for the last 4 Sundays. I like the atmosphere of a club and the banter and advice available.

I think that is the best advise anybody can give. I did not join a club straight away and it took me ages to start to learn. Since joining a club i have come on leaps and bounds.

              Same here.

I did try flying in the local park but I dont like flying around random people and dogs so I only did half a flight and went home again.

Also being able to watch other pilots who are better than you is a big help.
