  • Screwdriver sets...

After buying the align hex drivers, I need to get a decent screwdriver set, so I can finally throw the cheap sh*t I bought away at last

    Any suggestions?

I can't find the ones I bought a few years ago but these are similar

Model Shop Leeds - Specialists in radio controlled models

You may be able to get some good quality replacement shafts for the handles you have. I wouldn’t bother going for ones with ball ends. They seem to round of quickly, although it may have just been a poor quality set that I bought, so some may be ok.

I brought the Thunder Tiger set from my local model shop, one handle and 12 different ends on reversible shafts. Had them over a year and no wear on any tips.

Best tool shop I've ever found is Buck & Ryan in London, I use the Wera drivers they sell for building, great for those really small phillips and hex heads.

Ball ends are really useful. I use mine the most, and they work well - including undoing thread-locked parts.

I certainly wouldn't advise against them, but you maybe have to think what you're doing a bit.

If you're trying to put a lot of force in, a tight-fitting straight-end is likley to do a better job than a tight-fitting ball-end. If the fit of either is loose, or the tool or fastener is worn/damaged, you're probably not going to get a decent drive.

I bought a set of Japanese Industrial Standard screwdrivers from HeliProz in the US.
Most heli's we buy these days come with these screws and not Philips etc - they fit a LOT better and you tend to round the heads of screws far FAR less...

I never found them in the UK.

                Cheers,

The best ones ive ever had , and ive had a few sets are the Hudy ones both Screwdrivers and Hexes . There not the cheapest but they are tough , Titanium shafts that are replceable , also Guaranteed for life , although not sure how that works LOL . Most of the RC Car guys seem to use them . Hope this helps Rob

For Hex drivers I also use Hudy.
                    Superb IMO

Whatever you do dont buy the Maplin brand of sockets etc; they may be OK for electronics and finer electric works, but not for this hobby. I eventually bought various sets of drivers, sockets etc from Century UK. A bit more expenisve but the quality seems good and I have had no wear on tips etc.

TX DX6i (plus others);Phoenix flight sim; Spares - a lot of them!
                      Picooz - quite a few of them & Schweizer 300 (this is where it all started);

I have bought 2 sets of 'cheapish' precision tools as I didnt think you would use enough force to round heads e.tc, but you do so it is just false economy.

I was lookin for an Align screwdriver set (just so it matched the hex drivers )

Rob is absolutely spot on, especially if you have any Align helis, the (Japanese Industrial Standard) JIS screwdrivers are essential, Pozi & Phillips DO NOT fit and will strip the head out of the fastener, leaving you with an even bigger problem!
                          regards

I bought some JIS drivers recently from Fast Lad - I think they're extremely good so far
