  • Can I go nitro with 6 channels?

    Hi guys

Well I'm thinking that nitro is the way to go for my next heli. I saw a T-rex 600 nitro at my heli club yesterday and it was BEOOOOOTIFUL! Not certain I'll go that way just yet - still wanting to look at the Visions and Raptors.

Then I got to thinking, if I go the nitro route, must I upgrade my DX6i to a 7 channel radio?

I think the 7th channel is only for the governor. Am I right? If so:

    1) What does the governor actually do (it must govern the engine speed but how and why?)
    2) Can I fly without a governor? If so, what will the effect of not having one be?

Any help you can give will be much appreciated.

    Cheers.

    Hi Mart,

Some of my helis have the AR7000 in and other the 6200, so you wont need to upgrade. With regards to governors, I dont use them myself, and I'm sure some of the more experienced 3D guys will be along shortly to explain why they use them.

But basically, go buy yourself a nitro...you know you want to

I've had my 600N for about a year and I have yet to install a governor so I'm still only using 6 channels of my DX7 -it's absolutely fine for my level of flying, which is circuits, loops, flips.

A governor will basically help to keep a constant headspeed in more challenging moves and help stop the heli bogging but it's not needed for basic flying.

Yup 7th channel is normally for governor .. .but if you just want one headspeed then you can you a 6 channel Tx

Gov just keeps the headspeed constant with use of the throttle servo throughout the flight...

No you dont need a governor , but you need to be a bit better at setting up the throttle curves .. You should still set throttle curves even when you ruin a Gov just incase it fails .. Some people have just set flat line curves and when there gov crapped out blown an engine ....

          Martin,

You can still use a gov on a AR6200 or any 6 channel system, the gov would have to be a GV1 or a Mulitgov though, there are probably others aswel but gov's like the Align gov need an endpoint in your radio therefore needing the extra channel. The GV1 and Muligov can be setup to work without an extra channel.

          I've seen a 600N flown with a DX6i and a GV1.

Bogging is one thing the gov helps with but the most important IMO is that it reduces an overspeed situation (much worse than a bog)

You should still have curves that are somewhere right in case one of your magnets gets thrown.

There are also limiters, like the RevLock, these pull the HS down from a curve and never let you exceed a sepcified HS. These follow your curves until the HS is met.

          Hope this helps,

As they all say yes you can fly a 600n on a dx6i

As for a gov on channel 7 you can set a rev lock to engage at a certain stick position and from then on it holds the head speed at what you have set it to

But set up an idle up 1 1st and make sure you can fly the heli on that curve 1st. Unlike electric don't set idle up 1 to a flat out throttle curve no matter what...

I am flying my Knight 3D with RevLock10 governor using only 6 channels; the governor engages when it sees more than 25% throttle, and you set the head speed with buttons on the RevLock itself. If you want, you can use an extra channel to communicate the headspeed, much like you do with gain on a heading hold gyro.

Many thanks for the input guys. Sounds like a Revlock may be the way to go.

revolution models are doing a good deal right now, with the dx6i and a raptor 30 v2 with starting exp for £560
