We had a look for Andy's nitro. I had a cup of coffee then a couple of flights. We then went and looked a bit more. I cut a hole in a bramble and hawthorn bush and spotted a blade. Andy and Bob the Builder went in. Bob smashed his way in with a carpenter's saw! They got the heli out and it was very little damaged. It looks as if the crash was caused by a blade holder link coming out.
There was almost no wind and it was warm and sunny. Ideal flying conditions. I tried, for the first time, hitting throttle hold, autoing a bit then switching the power back on. That may not sound like a big deal to most of you but it was very exciting for me. I did it a couple more times but then my hands were shaking so I had to go back to normal flying.
Well done on finding the heli. We were looking in completely the wrong area and if you hadn't found it, I think it would be gone for good.

Duncan came out later to get some practice for 3D champs, which was nice to watch.

After a day of flying, I had a complete lockout coming out of a loop and the heli went nose-first into the rough before I had a chance to do anything. I hit TH to stop any further damage and strangely the heli lifted up above the long stuff and then dropped back again. The radio then started giving low Rx voltage warnings, so I assumed I'd had some sort of low voltage reset. The blades were folded back but I couldn't see any signs of damage. The log only showed low voltage warnings after TH which explained why I never got any warnings in flight, but didn't explain the lockout. After still not finding any damage, I found the rear cyclic servo was completely solid. I had the feeling I was able to level the heli with aileron but elevator had no effect for that half-second before it went in, so I'm pretty sure that's the culprit.

So amazingly, after hitting the deck at speed and full RPM, the scrub slowed the heli down enough to not cause any damage beyond a few cracks in the canopy. I'm pretty happy with that

Well done Richard. It was probably your quick reactions that prevented any further damage.

Align BL700H HV Brushless. Had around 3,150 flights and been through 7 crashes without having gears changed. The last crash was over 1,100 flights ago. I can't see any damage on the gears but it's gritty between the motor pinion and first gear, and I can't see the pinion under the plastic hood.

I don't know how long servos are supposed to last, but I've replaced all the servos on the heli with a newer set of Aligns until I get a chance to strip each one and examine it.

                      • I found one Align servo where one of the gears had picked up on its steel spindle, it was steel on steel. Outer part of gear was bronze or similar. It made the servo very stiff to turn as the spindle was forced to turn in the plastic.

                            • Sure did had a few on the electric. Given I'd been looking after my 2 youngest girls and fell over carrying one of them with what felt like cracking every bone in my body determined not to drop her I needed the break (forgive the pun). For once the wife didn't mind :-)
