That's an unusual failure. I've never seen an undamaged LiPo burst while in flight before, usually they only do that after a crash.

Was it in good condition before flying?

    • Maybe a sharp cable tie end or something it could be pushed into?

      • One lipo cell did have a tendency to be a little more drained than the rest after a flight, but would always charge to 4.20v. I think it puffed during flight, as the pinion made a mark in the top cell, then just burst, I do have a pic on my phone I'll have a go at putting it n here, Ian.

        • Could it be thet the pinion/shaft rubbed a hole in the battery causing the cell to puff and burst? I know the clearance between bottom of the pinion and shaft and the top of the battery is very tight on some Goblins with larger batteries and if they arent held down real tight there can be contact.

In any case it's good news that there was no fire, that would have been nasty!

          • Grumpy, no as the top cell wasn't the one that popped, damage to the top cell by the pinion was probably post "pop". Im really glad there was no fire!

            • Since it's stupidly windy today I spent my lunchtime siming instead

At least it's cheaper to crash that inverted than the real ones lol

              • Got my first sustained inverted flying today. Never tried it before. Of course used the nano. Crashed quite a bit with no damage. Was really enjoyable. Almost like learning to hover again. Well I suppose it was!

Then coming into land. Gust hit it and pushed it into the metal legs of our trampoline. Result. Snapped swash arm. Balls. Won't be replacing it with another Alu one. Plastic will do fine for me.

i wonder if that scoring happened just because of the snap, how many bearings do you use on it?

Its looks to me like bearing was possibly glued in wonky, and ground down the tube?

                          • Nick I think that it had started to develop a bend in the torque tube from a previous crash, and the centrifugal force had thrown it onto the side of the boom. I crashed it a few months ago and i think the torque tube was ALMOST straight. I will probably put a second bearing when I rebuild.

                              • Four flights with a 450 and two with a 550 this morning

Phone with time lapse, some 2 pics/sec, took the pic.

This 450 is a HK 450 PRO with a ZYX-s, with some 1500 flights on it.
