  • Ripmax Ripoff

Bought a ripmax dual output power supply on sat and foolishly shortened the mains lead before I tried it. Big mistake as the thing is faulty and now it's obviously unwarranted. Anyway I decided as it couldn't be exchanged I would have a look inside to see if it was a fixable fault and what do I find. The circuit board has obviously been repaired previously and must have been soldered by a monkey with a blowtorch.
That aside I thought that it would be wise to let others know that the shop (who shall remain nameless) now tell me that for every 10 they sell 1 doesn't work.
It will now cost me £150 to have a 40amp power supply (3 propeaks), where for an extra £20 I could have had a Maas.
Moral of the story, buy quality, buy once.

As it's been fixed already, is it out of the question that perhaps you could fix it yourself? After all, you've nothing to lose by having a go, eh? (provided you have a basic understanding of all things electrical)

That's really unfortunate but it's the danger of modifying things that are still under guarantee. In almost every case, any sort of modification will render the guarantee null and void which is something worth bearing in mind, perhaps go back to the trader and see if there's any room for negotiation.

They are rubbish. I had 3 they all died in double quick time, got my money back and bought a MAAS type

The dual outlet is certainly not worth £10 for another set of banana sockets. Wouldn't be so bad if it was actually a Dual 20A PSU but it's not.

If you want to send it to me I can have a go at repairing it.

I cant promise anything (especially timescale as im quite buisy) but it might be possible to fix it.

This is the PSU I have and its very good

Sometimes there are very good value PSU's in the CB radio section of ebay if you are not in a rush.

I paid £50 for my 50amp version of the same supply.

Sorry to hear you've had a problem, I've been using one of these for several years now and so far touch wood I haven't had an issue. I use the single outlet one to which I plug in a Much More power distributor if I need to do more than one thing at a time. Charged everything from 800mah CX2 batterys to 5000mah lipo's through it, I must have got one of the good ones!

Another Maas user here, had it for many years and it's never skipped a beat. I had been thru more cheap p.o.s PS than I care to think about until I got a Maas.

Mine was second hand and is a slightly older version with (quite innacurate) analogue dials. I think they were about £75 new when I bought mine but that was probably 5 years ago.

Sorry fellas, had to go out.
I only posted for a moan and to let others know that these units have a high fail rate. I already have one of these and it's been fine but I needed a higher output as I end up charging everyone elses bats at the field.
Thanks Holst for the offer and thanks also to Xygax who pm'd me offscreen with an offer to repair it just to save me money.I've not been a member for long and I've never met any of you but it's amazing how people just jump in to help when one of us has a problem.
Anyway I think I'll do what I should have done and get something decent, I like the look and sound of your unit Busterboy what make is it,maas only go to 40amp and what are it's physical dimensions (need to get it in my charge case)
                            Thanks again Holst and Xygax.

Never forget that a manufacturer's warranty is in addition to your statutory rights, and can not be used to reduce your statutory rights.

The warranty may be void, but that has no bearing on the goods supplied not having been of satisfactory quality.
