  • Applying Decals

    Hi all

Right, this is probably a really silly question but how do you apply decals to a canopy. I have finished my Raptor 50 Titan build which is going to have a fuselage fitted over the next couple of weeks but I thought it would be nice to get the canopy decorated for its maiden flight this weekend.

    Thanks

Take your time, peal a bit of the backing off and locate it correctly, then whilst pulling the rest of the backing off remove all air bubbles by rubbing with your finger or a cloth.

Cut a bit of the spare from the decals sheet and practice first so you can perfect the technique. Oh, and make sure the surface of the canopy is clean of oil etc. A bit of sugical alcohol should do the job.

A bit of time and care and you'll be fine.

With the T-Rex high vis decals the instructions tell you to apply them in warm soapy water so they spread even over the canopy then wait for it to dry.

          As it's a raptor,

You need to clean the release agent from the canopy using a scouring pad, take your time otherwise the stickers won't stick,

next fill the sink/bowl with warm soapy water, make your fingers wet and dip the sticker in the water, then place on canopy, if it's in the wrong place you can peel it off,

When you're happy with it's position using a towel rub the sticker from the centre towards the edge this will remove the soapy water that's trapped underneath.
          Cheers Daren

My apologies Aidi, they do peel off.

Are they stickers or do you do as Tim suggested and use warm soapy water?

Use warm soapy water to apply the stickers. You'll be able to move them around and get them in the right place and the warmth of the water will help to soften the sticker and make it go around very slight curves without wrinkling.

You worded that better than me Steve.

                Same result.

But how would I know, I never apply the decals any more, as you've seen for yourself.

Save them for when you want to sell the heli, and then it's surprising how much a set of new stickers on an old canopy spruces it up and makes it look fresh.

                          You wanna bet

I hate putting these things on. The first two I did with soapy water and they wont stick properly. The others are going on without water and sticking better.

Thank god a fuselage is going on this. I have a new found appreciation for painted canopys even more now!!
