  • Re-using an old OS engine

    Hi guys

You may recall me posting about a vintage RC heli that had been given to me by my nephew. Well, I was wondering:

    - how can I identify the engine model number? Is there a place where part numbers etc are inscribed?
    - could this engine be installed in a modern heli model, or has airframe technology and design made this not possible?

    Here's a pic of what I have:

Most of the Aligns, fair few Spektrum bits, bunch of Align & HiTec servos, OBE, VD & Bar.

I wouldn't re-use it. You need to be sure of it's history, specs, performance and reliability. A new kit may put extra stresses on the motor.

Out of curiosity, what size is that engine -a .30? Just wondering due to the fact that it has a pull start.

On the parts listings theres photos.

On the crank case on the sides. OS give the capacity..28/32/37 on the other you will find the model version. SF/SX etc

Looking at the carbs is a good guide to what it is if in doubt

I think you will find that engine is not all that old..

Give the engine a try. What have you got to lose?

ok, lets get realistic, if you are going to use it, test it thoroughly, refurbish whatever you can, get it serviced and make sure it's safe and reliable first.

you may find it could be not that old, i'm not sure when the pull start os32 was discontinued but then again it could be a few years old who know?
i would strip it down have a look at its condition if it looks ok then i would change the bearings and piston ring and use it
it it looks to badly worn then get a new engine as it will cost near enough as much to refurb as a new motor will cost

Just strip her down for a look. If the liners not scored and there is no major wear a new set of bearings and you will be fine. If it feels gummed up (people used to use castor based fuels) It might be an idea to stick it in some Hot water for a few minutes to soften the old oil/fuel before stripping it.

One of my best motors for planks, my old trusty supertigre 90 is 25+ yrs old, came from a damp woodshed where it lay for a few years on a Gangster 75..looks aweful (still does). Bloke used a bushsaw to cut the complete nose of the knackered airframe.

Stripped it, cleaned it, new bearings.

15yrs on..several hundred flights later its still going, turns a 13X11 on a pipe at 9700Rpm on the ground on straight fuel some 300 Rpm more than the new version of said motor...Its currently on loan in a mates 7-1/2lb Patternship whos gobsmacked at the verticle performance...
