  • Battery help needed please

After selling up a few years go i have been tempted back in to the hobby and have purchased a 550e rex fbl and a 500 rex fly bar both without batteries. I know they aren't cheap but thats about it as always had nitro's so what should i be buying for non 3d flying please??
2nd question is how good is the align 3gx fbl system, worth keeping or bin it?

I think, for the 500, it's still hard to beat the Zippy Compact 2650mah and / or the Turnigy Blue 3000s, aim for around 30C ish. I have a pair of 25C Gens Ace 2600s that are almost 9 years old and still going strong, but now I think the prices on them have shot up.

Hi Trillian, thats great, many thanks. Seems a dumb question but what voltage do i need. Some are 11.1v some are 22.2v and they are my first e birds so absolutely no idea!! These were recommended to me so i would assume i need 22.2v Youme 6S Lipo Battery,22.2V 4500mAh Lipo Battery 60C
but these are 60c and again no idea of 25/30/60c rating
The 550 has Align 3G on it and wish i hadn't sold the Spartan Vortex i bought off of you a while back!

Yeah, for the 500 and the 550, they both need 6s (22.2 volts). The 550 will generally need 4000-5000mah packs and the 500 uses 2600-3300mah packs. I have an old-school TRex 500 converted to FBL and I find the ideal weight pack for a proper c of g is about 450 grams. The Zippy compacts are a bit lighter but can sit far enough forward.

The thing about higher C rated packs is that some make claims that are not accurate and then price accordingly. On a 5000mah pack, for example, if it gives an honest 30C, that's 150 amps, which will be way more than you'd pull in normal non-aggressive flying.

Regarding the 3GX, I have never owned one myself. I did test fly a heli for someone once with a 3GX and it flew quite nicely, perhaps a bit 'robotic' feeling, bit not bad anyway. The Spartans are great in many ways, but they were most convenient with a Datapod, so you end up a bit invested with them. I still have a couple but I have moved over mostly to the Spirit, and I have one BeastX plus pro that I have not yet flown. And I have one older Ikon which works great but had some bad luck with the newer MSH brains.

Thanks for the heads up on batteries. I'll call my local shop tomorrow and see what they recommend. Would you say the 60c ones in the above post are not suitable for lazy flying and hovering?
FBL wise i think i'll try what's on it but i do prefer the feel of a fly bar hell for some reason and found i could fly the old raptor far more accurate and confidently than the 600 doc i had, strange i know! I've been trying to set up a blade 130x this morning but now found the dx6 has a fault on off switch so it doesn't save settings as i need to remove the battery to turn it off! Just what i need as i can't seem to stop the 130 from sinning round a keeling over even with book settings so give me something to do today while i hunt batteries.

Hi again, well that was not showing as a link. In general 60C is great, the more the better! But... usually the higher C rating the higher the price... so it depends.

OK, I did a search and I can see them at Aliexpress. Hmmmm, the price is good. Hopefully someone here has experience with them, I had never heard of them before :-o

Well, I had only said, and it may be obvious... you won't fly the 500 on those packs, which you'll realise when you get them, they will be oversized to the point of comedy

The 3GX flies OK, but it's a PITA to configure and very out of date. There are much better units out there these days.

Not even hd time to set them up yet! Work is full on as boss is on holiday so mad! Batteries arrived amazon prime, charged and balanced all ok and both hell's bind and all work just need a going over as the 500 wants to dig the tail in when it gets light and not enough trim left to level it so it needs going over and the pitch is ridiculous, think its -16 or so and +20 so be a it lively!
As far as 3G goes, well its coming off once i find a spartan vortex at a sensible price

Yes well out of date and not even worth trying to set it up. Spartan vortex on the list after i sold 2 compete sets!
