  • Rattle can canopies?

    Hi,

Is it possible to spray a canopy with a can of aerosol paint? if so which stuff? Im not after an amazing job obviously, but I would like to have a go.

    OR

Anyone spray blank canopies for a reasonable price?

    Thanks

    Tom,
In the past I've bought spray cans from Halfords to do my Trex600 canopy so it can be done. We found that nitro fuel eats it away slowly and we think this is down to the paint not going off properly before the laquer layer is added, so that in turn isn't properly hardening to protect the paint.

With the right paints (2 pac, probably) it won't be an issue.

But yes, it can be done

    Cheers,

Its the type of paint Rob. You need to use a two pack laquer to fuel proof it i.e. Paint with Hardner..

Not sure now, but it used to contains Cyonide?(spelling lol) so need proper breathing equipment and possibly have to cover exposed skin.

Of couse you know what I'm talking about.. BTW Rob..A painter looks similiar to those blokes in funny white suits that came looking for you at 3DC except the dont have masks

Did this with a rattle can from halfords, They also do a fuel proof laquer if you can find it, the only downside is it takes a couple of weeks to harden properly,

          Cheers Daren

            Thanks Brian
I used 2 pac laquer - I think the paint needs longer to go off than can be allowed (before applying the laquer to ensure it sticks to the paint).

I'm so glad Canomod and Fusuno came along
            LOL
            Cheers,

sure i read a thread on here from a guy who works in a paint shop and he said if you paint your canopy then send it to him with the postage costs paid for he would 2 pack laquer it for free! must search the threads.

Here is my attempt at a Halfords rattle can canopy ....

I laquered it with a Halfords laquer and after the first flight the 30% nitro started to melt the laquer!

Seems to have hardened off a bit with time though.

Not sure if I would bother again though, expensive way of painting it using Halford cans, its suprising how many you need. I have a compressor so it may be cheaper to buy a spray gun and get paint from the motor factors in cans.

Only problem then will be seeing if I can hold my breath long enough while spraying to avoid breathing in the cyanide!!

mmmm.... on second thoughts, anyone got the number for Canomods???

                  Having read the title, I was about to correct your grammar;

"No, it should say 'Can canopies rattle?'"

Never heard the phrase rattle can before.

ive thought about having a go a few times, but I have to say the thought has sort of vanished since canomod and fusano have become so widely available.

Infact if you want a truly individual canopy now, just use the one supplied with the model

Yeah I will be getting a Fusuno and an Insane in time, I just hate the thought of having an unpainted canopy lying around

You use an airbrush for that?
