  • Vernier adaptors

Some time ago I saw a pair of adaptors that fit onto a standard vernier gauge which help set up control rods and ensure they are the same length. Needless to say i cannot remember where I saw them.
Does anyone else recall these and if can you provide a link to the site selling them

I've seen people do a DIY job, just by drilling a hole in each jaw and bolting on a ball link. You're still able to use them normally though I guess in certain rare circumstances, the ball links might get in your way,

I'm confused. I use my vernier calipers and they work fine. Why would I need an adaptor?

If the measurements in the instructions are given between the centres of the holes and you want to be accurate you might need those dooodads. If the instructions measure between the ends of the socket on the ball links then those doohickies won't be needed.

                  Thanks Sao.

I understand that but, when two holes are the same diameter, you simply measure from the left hand edge of one hole to the left hand edge of the other hole.

There is no need to estimate where the centre of the hole is, as the distance between centre is tha same as the distance from left edge to left edge (or right edge to right edge) of the hole.

I'm probably being stupid, but how do you do that with calipers?

(Personally I just measure the overall length, as having equal length links is usually more important than having them a particular exact length).

I know this, you know this and everyone else knows this, but some people will say this is not accurate as you can only set the jaw of the caliper in one hole and the other you will have to judge by eye, bare in mind these items are made by Vario, a German company, and we all know they are renowned for their engineering prowess oh and overpirced products that you don't really need
Hell I don't even have a set of metal verniers just a cheapo plastic set that I've had for years but they do the job just fine

You use the hole internal dimension prongs on the verniers to measure from point to point of dimension B in the drawing below:

But, to those people I would say that, to use the lovely vernier adaptors you have to use your eye to determine that the link is in fact parallel to the vernier scale, unless you wish to buy another set of verniers to measure the distance...

I am with Martin on this one.

Surely this is creating a problem when there isnt one in the first place.

Then, to get the swash level, maybe you have to adjust a link by a turn or two. That would simply make the double vernier caliper holders head explode!
You can teach a man everything. Apart from experience.

My point was that calipers only have opposing ground (measuring) faces, whereas this measurement requires them pointing in the same direction.

I don't think the Vario tools are much use, either, as it would be hard to get them in the jaws parallel to the calipers.
