  • Vintage RC Heli

You may recall me mentioning that my nephew had an RC heli that I could have. He bought it up to me a few weeks back and I've just been taking a look at it.

It's a real vintage model but, in its time, it may have been a good one. Any of you guys that have been in the hobby for years care to comment?

    Here's a few pics:

    It is fitted with:

    Futaba FP-S128 servos
    Futaba FP-G154 rate gyro
    Futaba FP-R107N receiver
OS Max engine (not sure what size)
    OS 72801 recoil starter

The price on the reciver, a JR Propo Apex & model N7C-4SH, shows £699 and my nephew reckons it's at least 20 years old!

It seems this hobby has always been expensive!

    Hi Martin,

When I worked at MacGregors many years ago I found an unbuilt kit for one of these in their attic!

I can not remember the manufacturers name off the top of my head but it appeared to me to be a close copy of early Kalt machines.

That's about all I can tell you really.. I would date it around the mid 80's.. and MacGregor I believe were the importer and it was made it in Japan.

Your one is the only other one I've ever seen apart from the kit at MacGregors!

    Cheers

Well the timeline certainly fits Mark.

Just looked again and it has Ishimasa labels on it. Ring any bells?

Looks like a proper vintage heli. Would make a nice summer project to get it restored and flying again =)

Either that or see if the engine is worth using in a nitro?

            Hi Martin,

            Yep that's the one.

They originally did the Skylark electric machine which MacGregors imported. Then they branched out into doing the Playboy as their first Nitro machine. However I don't think it ever went on general sale here.. I'm pretty sure MacGregors just got some demonstrator kits in for shops to look at but never pursued importing them in bulk.

That makes it a very rare machine indeed!

            Cheers

I was given an old Shuttle ZX by a mate who left the country also gave me a X347 and a PCM9X11 which is now converted to 2.4 I also got a nice flight box and some bits and bobs, that got me started with the helis. I was told the shuttle would not be good to learn on? and was advised to get a T REX 600 which I did, after a year I still haven't had a chance to fly it. This year I will get out there and learn!

Once I learn the basics I would like to get this flying ? Is there any reason why not?

I have a manual which shows everything , which I got when my mate gave me the heli.
I could photocopy it and send it to you, some of the copy is a bit rough, PM me if you want me to do that.
otherwise I found this link in Google

                    Vintage helis

I just saw this thread in a google search.

Do you still have that Ishimasa playboy? I have a skylark. It's just a museum piece really. I had never seen the playboy before.

I really like those pullstart OS engines though, they are really quite a cool thing in a way (and were pretty expensive).

There is someone remanufacturing the Schluter HeliBaby. There are three versions of it avialable, a fixed pitch nitro, full collective pitch nitro and electric.

The first heli I owned was an American Revolution 40. But thankfully I never tried to fly it. I got it in some kind of swap deal and then traded it for something else. It had a K&B .40 engine, was fixed pitch, no gyro and quite a small thing. I'm sure any attempt to fly it back then would have been disaster.

I just got a Baron 30 by the way. It was part of a job lot of Kalt stuff. I have seen about 3 or 4 on Ebay recently. But if you start feeeling really nostalgic and want another Baron... there's one on my shelf right now
(and I will prob sell the baron 30 because I was really only interested in the other parts).
