Anyone recommend a tacho for heli use?

Me and a clubmate want to buy one...

As far as I am aware there are two on the market at the moment, one is the xcell one, which I have, it is a well built optical tacho that comes with a nice leather pouch. The only draw backs are that if you are not careful in putting it back in its pouch once you have finished with it, the tendency is to knock the power switch on and flatten the batteries!! The only other draw back with this one is it only goes up to a max speed of 2000rpm, which is fine for IC heli's, but not so good if you also want to use it on electric models, as their headspeeds tend to be upwards of 2000rpm more often than not.

The second one is and I cant think of the name of it at the moment, but it is made by the same company that do the throttle jockey and throttle jockey pro IC governors. Theirs I know does go up to higher speeds, but I am not so sure it has such a glowing report on quality and usability.

    Cheers,
    Pete.

I use a skytach, it's easy to use as you simply point it at the rotor, look thru the little window and adjust until the blades become still. A quick look at the screen gives you your head spead to within 10 rpm. It will measure upto 2800 although it may say 2400 on the web link below. Turns it's self off aswell after 30 sec of non use and is safe to use as you can be a fair distance from the heli.

i just use a rev-lock governor. lets you set the rpm on the unit, no need for a tach at all.

Thanks guys - i'll look at both units on the web.

(Ade - I've got a revlock on one heli which as you say works great with no tacho, but not the other and my buddy uses throttle jockeys - DOH)

Pete, just put the MA tach into the case upsidedown

I think the latest versions of the MA tach go higher than 1990, but you'd have to check that out.
