  • Sullivan Dynatron or K&S starter

My Irvine 12V starter has to go, as it is not powerful enough for my 90.

Any recommendations for the best starter? I was hoping to use the two nicads (3900maH) that I currently run in series or should i convert to Lipos?

Any help or advice would be great!
    James

there is 2 types of starters. there is dynatron and the rest.

a dynatron, robbe wand and decent lipo setup will last many many many years.

    cheers

The Dynatron will turn the world so I would recommend one, but they are expensive. I use two 3s lipos.

You will be fine with Nicads. The issue is more with the voltage as assuming you are using 2 7.4v packs you will get a maximum of 18v at full charge whereas with 2 lipos you are up to 25v at full charge which will give you a very powerful starter.

I'm sure the nicads will turn a 90 NP though.

I have never used the K&S so I have no idea how good they are.

        KifeEdge,

Have had my K&S starter for the past 6 years and it has never missed a beat. Even the two nicads strapped to it are 6 years old and it still cranks over my YS91's in a cold February without issue

Two fully charged nicads are as much Volts as I want to put through my engine and one way bearings.. too much and you start to get in to the danger zone of bending conrods and breaking bearings..

        Cheers

Also check out the Sullivan Hi-torque starter. The dynatron's little brother.
I have one and it turns my 50 and 90 over easily.
Go 4S Lipo and you will never look back.
There are a few on ebay here although all in the states.
Theres even a full blown dynatron

James, as Mark says - just watch you don't try and start a hydro-locked 90 with it! LOL
