  • Pie Dish

    Howdie,

Can someone in "laymans" terms explain how to enter, hold and get out of the pie dish 3D move?

I am sort of there, but cant quite get it to hold and fly the "dish"

Reading some of the info out there is quite difficult to understand, so if you can explain how to do it in easy terms it would be appreciated!!

    Cheers
    Aidi

    Good question Aidi.

I can rattle them off with the 600nsp (very untidy though) but telling you how to enter and get out of them is way over my head.

All I do know is I spent 3 weeks on the sim getting to do them summat like and the only tip I can give you is "Very little stick movement" and control the move with the dish.

i tend to enter a nose down pie dish by simply using too much rudder in a turn and then holding it there. once in it there is very little in terms of adjustment or stick movement (unless compensating for wind etc). im sure one of the much better pilots can give a better explanation!

oh yeah, slow down the tail a little to lift it up, speed it up to drop it down - i think!

Tim, do you enter them by flying sideways and dropping the tail or fly into it backwards (if that makes sense?!)

If you have the Phoenix sim, there is a pretty good tuition on how to enter and perform the pie dish.

Yep, seen that, but thats going into inverted! Thats just a bit beyond my flying at the moment! So far in my attempts i am flying backwards, back elevator and then attempting to compensate the hold using rudder. What i dont want to do is carry on doing this if its not the way to do it... Complicated eh!?

If you are thinking of doing a tail down pie dish then first you ideally want to be able to fly backwards (skids out).

1 fly a backwards circuit and start dropping the tail whilst maintaining the circuit height and size.

2 It's actually a balance of all controls so difficult to describe but collective and airleron keeps you in the circuit and Elevator controls your height...... sort of

The thing about pie dishes is you will practice and practice and suddenly the penny drops and you get the flow. It can be easier to start them quite flat first and steepen the heli angle as you get more comfortable.

Here's a quick phoenix rec of a basic skids out pie dish. Notice I do a backward circuit first to demonstrate the improtance of beaing able to fly backwards first.

You explain it much easier than us Richie.. Well done.

Nice one Richie, I was going to ask if someone who had 10 mins could put a small recording together using Pheonix..

Not that I'm really qualified to talk about this, but I start from a hover and put a little aileron in to start the slip. Then back elevator and try to catch it into the balanced manoeuvre before it hits the ground. Very small stick movements seem to be the key once balanced.

As for inverted pie dish, I always crash

Cool! Always amazes me how little stick movement there is when flying these moves. A bit more studying of the video and sticks and eventually ill get it!

Cheers Richie... We need to get you an EGS!!

Aidi if you look at the rec you'll see I accentuated the elevator to try to highlight where you use elevator to control height.

                            Hope that helps
