      Liam,

      If you think of a batt as being empty at 0 and full at 100. When you use it and discharge to, say, 70, you top it up to 100 again and off you go.

      But, if you only go down to 70 all the time the batt eventually forgets it has 70 left and stops working at 70. It only remembers you use it to 70.

      To keep the batt in good order it is a good thing to discharge it down to its lowest charge every now and again to remind it that it has all the way down to 0 to work with.

      This is called the memory effect. The charge / discharge process is called cycling the battery. NiCads esp need this doing every now & then.
