  • BMFA Scammers.. Again! Sort it out!

BMFA made such a good effort in changing their website and banning all other email address' than ISP ones? Yeah.. Good work guys.

I'm selling my 250 on there.. So I had this email this morning ( the usuall scam that I'm sure we all know about, but just incase I thought I would post).

Good Day My Dear Seller Mr/Mrs,

I came across your advert today which i'm so interested on..But before
we proceed further kindly get back to me with this below details if
    it's still available for sale.

    1.It's present condition
    2.The initial owner
3.And your best price apart from the one i read on the advert.

Ensure you remind me your best price because this will be my very
first time of purchasing goods on the internet i pray i'm dealing with
    the right person.

Hope to read from you soon.
    MY REGARDS.

So obviously I replied with - £3500 Cash On Collection only hahaha ( seems £3500 is the usuall ammount to launder?)

    a.bruce85@gmail.com is the email.

Hi Jerome are you sure they want rid of the scammers? Could it not be they want rid of us "bmfa" members Seems to me they have booted more bmfa members than scam artists

      Debatable isn't it

I used Gmail for many reasons... access anywhere and direct to my iPhone. Very frustrating to have to use my ISP email and to be honest not many people do anymore.

(Yes I know I can setup a forward, or account on my iPhone for my Blueyonder email... but I don't want to )

I don't think theres a full way to remove scammers unless they tied in everyone's BMFA number to there name and email address upon registration to the site and they double check everything is okay against the main BMFA members list.

But then how many bad eggs are there out there who even rip other modelers off even if you were to do this ?

              This is just it!

Why not leave the site as it was and put big notices up there for members to post of possible scammers etc and how to avoid being ripped off.

Mark by doing what you say they would have a name and address of the registered member to pass on to police regardless of screen name etc.

So what is the problem? Just ignore it, nothing to sort out.

As mentioned I was posting just incase there are new members or people who don't about the scams and the way they work.

If you were walking down the road blind and there was a big hole, wouldn't you want someone to tell you about it and let you know how to avoid it.

You can't always use technology to substitute common sense.

In my opinion people should be made aware of the scam, the effects, and how to deal with it themselves.

Had a similar one asking about my parkflyer. I tracked the IP address to Nigeria. Not saying they all originate from there. Also tracked other scam emails to China, Holland and the Far East.

As mentioned I was posting just incase there are new members or people who don't about the scams and the way they work.

I agree that people should be warned, but I remember scams like this 20 years ago. My boss got a letter saying he had won so many thousands of US$. Letter came from North Africa. Nowadays, it's not hard to tell the scam from a genuine inquiry. The wording of the message is the biggest giveaway.

Changes made on the BMFA are to limit who can register as a seller and does nothing to restrict buyers. If a buyer had to register to email you'd miss out on possible legitimate contacts who don't meet their requirements with regard to registration.

As always though thanks for the reminder that people like these are still out there.

                          Phil.
