  • 450 Down

Picture the scene....the 450 was being flown for the first time following a tail boom change when... at about 50ft up I initiate a gentle piro and stop after approx 1 turn, when the heli goes crazy and something falls off. Due to the rapid gyrations of the heli I correctly guess that the tail has gone. I get lucky and, with lots of frantic inputs on the sticks and a slight breeze, it misses the concrete and piles in from about 20ft onto the grass.

The cause appears to be failure of the tail case side screws, they have all pulled their threads!! This was a MicroHeli tail. This was not touched during the boom change and looked fine.

Usual damage - blades (brand new, 2 flights only ), main shaft, feathering shaft, tail case and blades, upper side frame where the canopy pin has pulled and rotor head holder where the Jesus bolt has gouged out the centre. Surprisingly, the drive belt is in one piece!

Oh well, thats heli flying. Parts on order, rebuild in progress.
    Shaun.

I was always crashing my 450, I soon learnt to check everything after any sort of crash if your tail goes in future hit your throttle hold and try to auto it down, it takes the tail out of the equasion, you may not land perfectly it but it will keep the damage down as the inertia will be taken out of the blades.

its amazing the difference it can make. remember though 450's are quite difficult to auto the blades do lose headspeed very quickly.
        All the best
