i know that ive outgrown my futaba401 but its taking the **** now!!!!! just had another incedence with it, great recovery, but dam, its killing my confidence now!!!!! i dont want to fly till i get a new gyro and tail servo to match, cant figure out if the servo has had it either bcoz it felt like the rudder went for a second, but all seems well after that, all movements are fine, tail is silky smooth, maybe it mechanical aswell!!!! arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

    Hmmmm.

I doubt its the 401 Pete, Although there are better gyros the 401 still has enough staying power for most 3D pilots.

I think the servo (not mentioned which) could be the problem though.

its a 9650 at the mo, my 9257 is in for checking bcoz it was doing the same with that, is when i fly backwards in to a flip, or even jut flying backward, it just gives up, done it on 2servos now, and i can make the trex do the same, its destroying all confidence now!!!!

Sounds like some proper fault finding is needed. Could be something affected by the cold. I wouldn't fly anything until we can find a definite fault. I'm busy at the moment but I'll get back to you if things don't get sorted. Do you only have the 6100 Rx? Perhaps a range check might be an idea? Is there a problem when the tail is working hard? Although you have the problem on two different helis don't you. Can you make a list of everything that's common to flying the two helis?

trex 500, 401 gyro, 9257 on the tail, ar7000 receiver
outrage g5, 401 gryo, 9257 on the tail, ar7000 receiver

am using a dx6i tx, all range checked, all fly fine other then when i want to push them abit harder, and it happened once in the summer with the trex 500, so might not be the weather

So you've only got one 9257, one 401 and one ar7000 and one dx6i?

The idea is to swop bits over until the fault swops as well. Unless you mean that the only unit that is common is the dx6i. If that's true then it's the dx6i or your setup, like the gyro gain, which is common to both faults. Or as you say it's not a fault just you expecting too much of the gyro/servo cobination. I don't know how good they are when you push them hard. As soon as the gyro allows the tail to get out of line the force needed from the gyro will need to be greater and if the servo is on the limit anyway when going backwards it will need more force to pull it back in. Sounds like the combination are just not really good enough and need to be donated to a charity like chrisjohnaid.

I would not expect the 401 to struggle holding fast backwards and backwards loops unless you are absolutely brutal on the collective pitch and start to bog the head. The shortcoming of the 401 is in the accuracy of the stops if you are trying 4 point tick tocks and the like, and in consistency of the piro when travelling (whipping with the wind) which makes travelling piro manoevres a lot harder.
(have I fooled anyone into thinking i can do this sort of thing recogniseably? ).

You might be able to get a bit more gain, as long as it doesn't wag flying about. If it starts to bounce on the piro stops then you can kill that with a little bit on the delay pot and still increase the gain.

I would check the tail linkage for slop and stickiness, and also consider fitting 9257 gears in the 9650 to speed it up. Then it is about the ultimate 450 tail servo available!

Although I have csm720 gyros on three of my helis I feel no need at all to upgrade the 401 on my 450.
