  • Diazepam and flying...

    Now before any discusion starts:

I am not promoting the use of Diazepam(Valium) whilst flying.

If you don't know one of the main uses of Diazepam is anexity and stress disorders, there are rumours around that snipers in the army use it before taking out a 'hit'.

Unfortuantly I'm currently signed off work and am on a high doesage of Diazepam due to reasons I would rather not discuss.

Since I've been flying again I have felt that in one way my abilities have improved as I've less anexity and stress over crashing, and I haven't acctually crashed.

I wonder if like the Olympics they do drug testing for 3D Masters etc... I'm sure there must have been someone at somepoint who have used Diazepam before their flight?

Unfortunately I have a lot of experience in this. One thing you should know is that this class of drugs is only useful in the short term. They soon cease to be effective and your original symptoms will return and you'll be addicted to the drug. Coming off them is very painful and must be done slowly with medical supervision.

Oh belive me I know this.

I'm on 30mg a day and am going to be tapered off them over the next 6-12 months and have alreayd experince some very horrible withdrawl symptons.

I went from 100-150mg to 30mg in two weeks as the Dr would not prescribe me anymore and it was the worst two weeks of my life and the withdrawl sympton still presist.

I am thinking of taking some nervous calms as i think its limiting my flying ability

because in the simulator i fly really good, and in real life im too nervous to get it off the ground incase of crashing, been told by a few to fly like your in the simulator, but my fingers just feel so weak like, though ile probably stick one of my ipod ear peice in and listen to some music rather then taking some relief

Loll, funny just started listening to jump drum and bass,

Though i was thinking of Oxygene 4 by Jean Michel Jarre. Great peice of music if you ask me and i think its probably a good peice of music to fly too aswell

CAllum, the reason you are more sressed when you fly the real thing is because there are conequences to crashing, these will actually help you in the long run.... How many times have you tried something in the sim that you would never try for real? (yet anyway), the slow steps that crashing and then costing you money will mean that your flying will come on gradually, and with the due respect that the heli deserves.... Not too sure what i am trying to say but basically, fly feeling nervous, it will give you the edge in the end

Take smaller steps. Fly someone elses heli with a professional instructor or get an mcx. Once you know you can hover on your own you'll start feeling confident.

I thought this was supposed to be a bit of fun?
The nerves are all part of the rush.
If it wasn't then it would feel like the sim and, OK, you might fly a little better but your not gonna get the same buzz.
                    Keep it real I say.

I work with many fast jet pilots and I'm sure none of them would "calm themselves down" prior to flying, would mean an accident pretty quickly i'm sure.

Doesnt drinking calm peoples nerves? ie a whisky when something goes wrong? look how drinking effects driving!

Or how about a sprinter, they wouldnt want their reactions slowed would they.....??

Bored now so I'll stop going on.....

I am getting right in to inverted flight at the moment and its like learning all over again. Hands are shaking like a leaf after landing, I love it.

Dont let the thought of crashing put you off, because a year or so down the line when you can pretty much do all possible with your heli you will still be crashing! just hopefully not so often

                              Hahaha.

I think everyone is missing the point!

I was just wondering if they do drug tests like in the olympics for 3D Masters etc?

Perhaps one piolt has used the drug before to calm his or her nerves.
