  • what do you think?

I went to get my first heli today The man said it needs a mini chrystal for the mini reciver Where do you get these??? Also i need a transmitter, But he said a plane transmitter is no good and it needs a computer on it. Is a jr3810 a good option???Also the man i bought it of said all this crazy stuff about pitch and gyro??? How hard is it to set up??? I get it at christmas so would it be worth paying to go to the next fleming park meeting so someone could help explane and set it up for me?
    Thanks,
    Dan

the 3810 will do the job nicely but you will need to fit a schulze or hyperion receiver or it will glitch when your flying it.

the zoom was plagued with tail drive shaft issues early on. eventually somebody released a belt drive conversion for it. If you have the shaft drive i would definitely recommend you try to find the belt drive conversion.

the trouble is that things like the belt drive are going to be harder to find these days as most are flying trex's or the other newer models that have been released since like the outrage G5.

I had the Zoom with shaft drive & would not recommend it, belt drive Zoom is a very reponsive heli & would not recommend it to the first time flyer, you could use a training kit but still would not recommend the Zoom altrough its not a bad heli.
JR3810 is a very good radio but theirs some second hand Spectrum DX6's on the market now with the receivers.
Like Ade suggests Trex 450 is a much better heli.
Today's outlook is fine for flying.

Ditto on the shaft drive, but the main thing wasnt the shaft it was the gears, if it has bevel gears it should be ok, you just cant run really high headspeeds on the zoom or the carbon tail drive shaft wears at the bearings or the hex insert for the drive gear wears.

I'm not sure I would agree with the description of "responsive", at least not on the cyclics, it needed a high headspeed to get passable 3D performance, it just couldnt flip well without running higher headspeeds or modding the hell out of it.
Political Correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

Just realised after just reading this I did change the motor & ESC on my Zoom in turn found that the tail shaft gears & bearings did not last as long caused many crashes.

I agree Ron.......We need to nurture the young so they enjoy they hobby ... I dont think he will be doing 3D with it anyway.... As a first heli he wont go wrong with a CP heli instead of a FP one ... I built a 450 zoom the other month for a m8e of mine and set it up as well ... it was belt driven tail and flew really nice ... little bigger than the 400 but none the less not a bad heli .... I think some of the newer model parts are interchangable .. Will have a look as someone has mentioned before that some of the head bits offa certain helis will fit ... We need to help this young man out with knowledge of the heli and setting it up ....The best thing other than a sim you can buy is a set of training undercarriage .. .

Yup and with the experience of the fliers on this forum he can be helped out from start to finish .. Mind you I think he needs to find someone close to him thats willing to lend him a hand for the initial test flight and set up and to explain it while they do it .. We have an indoor meet where I live and its the best thing to be around here as we all help each other out ... Me personally I dont fly indoors n e more ... Am too much of a nitro freak but I go every week and will help n e one should they ask ....

If memory serves me right I think some of the mini-pred bits fit the 400 zoom.. not sure but am sure someone will pop up with knowledge of it more then i got

the JR 3810 will work but we need to know the make and model of the rx so we can say if its going to work and what crystals your going to need.

ideally you should be looking at something a little more modern like the spektrum dx6i or futaba 6ex 2.4. it will cost you a little more but you will have less issues in the long run.

i bought a futaba 6exa not long back of ebay but they never said it wasnt 35MHz.
the man in my club said it was an amarican transmitter.

my reciver make is a gws r4p;r6n. What transmitter will work with it? its a 35mhz band. Also would it be better to buy a new mini reciver with a mhz the same as my futaba transmitter? would this be a cheaper option?
                              Thanks,
