question on channels

Hi,

I've Got a Blade MCX, which is 4 channel (I presume these to be throttle, rotation, tilt sideways and tilt front to back). The Walkera 4#3b has 5 channels. What does the fifth channel do, and is this a good second heli?

4 channel heli - aileron, elevator (cyclics 2 channels), rudder (yaw), throttle (speeds the rotor up and down).

5 channel heli -aileron, elevator, rudder, throttle, collective pitch. normally the throttle and collective pitch move together with the left unsprung stick movement. They are mixed using the throttle curve and pitch curve to give the desired amount of throttle at the different collective pitch angles.

6 channel heli - as above but wih a remote adjustable gain on the rudder gyro. This is a feature of all good gyros.

7 channels - as above but with adjustable set rpm on the governor controlling the head speed.
This covers all that is necessary for full in 3D flying.

More channels, in flight mixture control, scale stuff retracts, bomb doors, remote control of pipe and slippers.

One question, do you ever use a governor on an electric heli or is it only nitro?

On the smaller electric helis (up to trex500 size) its not necessary to use a governor. some of the ESC have a governor mode which tries to keep the head speed constant by electrickery without a sensor for feedback. however it actually works pretty well to run the ESC flat out 100% and set the head speed with the pinion size. Electric motors are quite self governing due to the back emf.

On the larger helis like the trex600 people do sometimes use a separate govenor such as the Aerospire eMultiGov. I beleive the CSM revlock can also be used on electrics.

But really good 3D performance is possible with just 6 channels, for nitros it is nicer to have 7.
