  • Servo or gyro problem?

Went to the field on Sunday, first flight with the Raptor 30 was slow figure's.
on one turn I saw a tail glitch and on the next turn a little wag. I decided something was amis so I came down to land. Just as I was a couple of feet off the deck the tail went into a spin but I managed to get it down level.

My tail is usually rock solid all the time so I put the heli in the pits to inspect the setup. could not find anything wrong so I went through all the wiring and replaced an extension that goes to the servo.

Back on the flightline did a long spoolup looking for tail glitches nothing seen.

came into a low hover and lost the tail again. back in the pits same thing all working ok. Spent the next 3 hours tring to suss out the fault always the same thing happens.

    only happens at flying revs

I get a dead tail servo that will right itself after a moment or two

when the servo is dead I have power to the GY502 and the LCD display senses stick input

pack volts are ok at 4.9V

I have since tested all the connections with a meter -all ok

I have ordered another servo s2954 to replace the s2953

    any other ideas out there?

Nothing worse than an intermittent fault
Does sound like the servo is the most likely culprit though.

    Good luck!

I had a 9253 on my Rappy 50. Was fine on the bench but let go under load. You did well to notice and land without a problem. When mine let go I was inverted and it went in

Yes I was very lucky not to have been a lot higher. It was the first flight so I was just warming up.

ordered another servo so there goes my new radio for this week at least

I hope this fixes it as you say nothing worse than an intermittent fault

Sounds like a typical 9254 failure. They are well known to go like this - the end is nigh!

Did you notice how warm the servo was at all Steve? This is normally a sign if its hotter than usual.

Just put four tanks through the Raptor with the new s9254 on the tail.....

First tank was just inches high just in case (coated heli in lube)

next couple of tanks were trying to sort out a bit of wag on the tail (reduced gain by 20) then ok but stops were a but mushy.....

reset rate mode up for zero drift....

still puzzled by the wag and reduced gain I checked the frame rate on the gyro (lowered it Sunday to test with standard servo) aha its still on low. Went back up 20 on the gain and high frame rate wag gone......stops now solid again..

last tank was spot on no problem so it looks sussed.......

Thanks for comments as it helped a lot with confidence on initial flights knowing that the
                likley culprit was the servo......

Lee servo was cool as usual any idea how old it was? just for ref..... So I know how long this will last....
