  • Upgrading from a Nexus

    Hi all,
I'm new here so please bear with me. I am sure this has been asked before and I will try searching around.
I have been teaching myself to fly with a Nexus 30 and am getting fairly comfortable doing circuits.

It is getting harder and harder to get bits for it and they seem quite expensive. So I am thinking of upgrading

Ideally i would like to transfer the engine and radio from the Nexus so i am limiting myself to a 30 size machine. my local shop recommendds the sceadu over the raptor, but what do you think ????

i would recommend a 50 which ever way you go. it will cost a little more but they fly so much nicer.

as for sceadu vs raptor. its been covered over and over but the jist of it is.

    Sceadu flies nicer,

Raptor is more durable and cheaper to run.

I would recommend a raptor over the sceadu. For the simple fact that you can get the parts almost everywhere. Its cheap to repair also. What you could do is get the raptor 30, drop your gear in it and at a later date upgrade it to a 50 sized machine (its really easy to do). I gotta say that the diffrence between a raptor 30 and 50 is quite a bit also. The 50 has so much more power and sits in the hover far more easily. All it takes is a little bit wind to knock the 30 and its all over. Dont know much about the scedau but i here its a nice machine. My mate at Alans Models rekons he'd rather have a Kyosho Caliber 30 over a raptor or sceadu anyday. He rekons the controls are alot more simplified and it all leads to stabler flying. What does everyone else think??? I think the raptor seems to be the choice for most.

How about a Knight 50, they are cheaper than both the Raptor and the Skidoo, both initial purchase and parts.

When I first saw these machines I was very sceptical as to their quality and life expectancy, but having seen both BobJ and RogerH fly them to death those doubts have long gone.

You can get them from Skyline Models.

Whichever you go for, you'll like them in comparision to the Nexus

          Cheers,

I am quite keen to get away from the Kyosho supply issues, which is why I discounted the Caliber.

Cheap easy to obtain parts has got to be the way forward. And a model that isn't going to be superceded in 6 months time.

Think I may have to pop into skyline. It just worries me about shops bias, but I suppose everyone is.

As an aside, has anyone flown in Germany. Can I use my 35 meg radio, do I need licensing etc???

in the UK there really is only one 30 size heli that is properly supported and has cheap parts.

            the raptor.

also if offers an upgrade path to a 50 size later on.

personally i would just buy a 50 to start with and that gives you another option ontop of the raptor too, the knight 50 is looking to be a good machine.

skyline are good guys, tell them where you want the hobby to take you and they will sell you the right model and gear to fit your budget. They are specialists and know what they are talking about, they arent your average locah hobby shop.

as long as your transmitter is transmitting on 34.950-35.300 (which I think is A band) FM and is "CE" marked then it will be legal for UK use. You will need to contact your local club and join them as well as joining the BMFA for insurance. You may be able to join the BMFA through that club.

              Cheers ADE,

Is that knight 50 the same as the TZ that you reviewed. Is that still looking as good as when it was reviewed.

I am already a BMFA member etc for flying in the UK. Work looks like it is going to send me to Germany and now India too. I was just wondering whether anyone knew if there were any other legalities involved in flying in either of these two countries

The TZ is still flying nicely. apart from an issue with keeping the tracking consistant. Pretty sure this is down to me wearing the dampers out but not had a chance to confirm it.

there is lots of info on the skyline website about the knight and I have a video of Bob flying his at north notts flyin.

as for flying abbroad your best bet is to give the BMFA a ring. Thats the best bet for accurate information.
